The standard meaning for merkin, going back several hundred years,

is
a pubic wig. So, in a sense, it is a wig that you wear Down

Under...

A pubic wig??? Wow, is that for people with genital baldness? Or

are you
supposed to shave off what you got and then wear the wig? Or is it

just
for
special times like Valentines Day when you might want to go for a

fancy
hairstyle? The mind boggles...

I dunno, although I tend to use 'Merkin' in the 'citizen of the USA'

sense,
and mean no offence by it (I take no offence about being called an

'Aussie'
either, and use it in the same sense), the irony of its original

meaning
still amuses me from time to time.

Yowie
"But some of my best friends are Merkins"

The term was also used in another newsgroup, but when people found out
what it means, the spelling was changed to Merkan. Using "a" instead of
"i" is more appropriate anyway.

*Especially* several hundred years ago? Like it makes any more sense for
people to want them now?

ROFL!! I guess what I was thinking was, weren't people much more modest than
now? But I guess it would make far more sense than such a product *today*. I
mean, you sure don't read about "Ye Olde Bikini Wax Shoppe" in the history
books or anything. I guess it was not only more attractive for women to be
fatter then, but also hairier.
Sherry.
Thinking she ought to just shut up now.

Mohecan merkin, perhaps, dyed pink.
Hippy merkin with hair down to your feet.
Punk merkin all spikey and green.

At first, I thought this was a poem! Is it?

Here are some more to contemplate:

Pigtails merkin
Teased beehive merkin (a la B52's) (good one for men )
Corn rows merkin
Dreadlocks merkin

For the fashion concious...
