Default Excitement in the AM (OT)

There was, apparently, and earthquake this morning. According to USGS,
it was 5.4, centered in Illinois (NW of Evansville, IN, and SW of
Vincennes, IN), was felt as far away as St. Louis, MO!

All we felt was the floor shake, as if a very heavy truck drove past the
house (or some young idiot with a boom-car).

According to the news here in the Carolina Lowcountry, it was felt in some
Atlanta suburbs, too! IIRC this is the same fault (New Madrid) that runs
near Memphis before veering off to Marked Tree, AR.

Nancy was late leaving for work today because of that quake. She had to
spend some time looking for USGS info on the quake so she could put a
story about it up on the newspaper website and get a story ready for the
print edition.

It figures. I leave CA, and the earthquakes follow me. I'm just glad
nobody was hurt.

That would be a New Madrid quake, wouldn't it? That seismic area is huge,
but you rarely hear about it in comparison with the west coast.

We have tiny little quakes here, occasionally. They're barely noticeable,
but it's a fallacy that there's no seismic activity here in the northeast.

That's a reasonably good sized quake, especially for an area that seldom has
them. The way you felt it is the way I feel most of ours, if they're over
4.5 or so. I don't usually feel anything smaller. Once every 20 years or
so, we get one that makes you sit up (or fall down) and take notice.

I hate earthquakes. Glad nobody was hurt.
Seattle had one back in about 2001 (?) a 6.8 and it scared the crap out of
me.
