Even funnier are the people who think that Australia and New Zealand are
part of the same country or people who think New Zealand is a part of
Holland or Alaska. When we travelled around the US recently few people
could pick our accents. They always began by thinking we were English,
no, Australian then, nooo, then they gave up

I confess that I can hear the difference in Brit vs Aussie accent, I don't
think I could dintinguish Kiwi from Aussi.

Just ask them what three plus three is - if it sounds like sux, you've
got yourself a Kiwi.

(Helen Wheels, just waiting for an EnZedder to add that if they say five
you've got an Australian)

They say that while people have different accents whilst speaking, almost

No way anyone could mistake their singing accents for American!

Yes, they're great! And I thinkthey prove once and for all that almost all
English-language singers sing with an American accent, because whent hey
*dont* they sound very different - which made the Proclaimers very famous.

Even songs which are supposed to be quintessentially Australian (such as
Australian Country music) still sound American. I don't notice most of the
time, but I do when its a particularly 'Australiana' type song.

I've got a video recording of the Australian Opera performing "Summer of
the Seventeenth Doll", and it was really wierd at first hearing opera
sung in a very strong Strine accent. They did it convincingly though.
