Default spinal consultant appointment (OT)

I went to the hospital today to see him. He was really charming (unusual)
as he is one of those surgeons that is self-important and you hardly dare to
speak to such a god-like creature..Lesley will know what I mean.

We discussed the semi paralysis of my right hand caused by breaking my neck
and how I can't write or sew a button on etc. He said it still might
improve a bit but maybe not. I asked why there was such a horrible dent
in the back of my neck - he had to take a bone graft to get it all together
and that I was lucky that I didn't die (having refused to go to hospital
with many fractures for 2 weeks because of Boyfie)
That's the first time I knew about a bone graft. I'm not surprised given
that he didnt tell me that I was being operated on the next day. I found
out about that when some nurses came to take blood "for your operation
tomorrow" I said "what operation?, I'm not having an operation" they said
I was. I said I was not.
I was..

I do!3+ years working with orthopaedic surgeons worth of knowledge

Although I did find the spinal and hand people tended to be nicer then the hip and knee brigade many of whom were nigh on certifiable psychotics including one who was eventually sacked (and it's bloody hard to sack a consultant) after the theatre nurses refused to work with him, their lead nurse saw him pick a drain up off the floor in mid-operation i.e. he was gowned up and that rendered him unsterile. And his post-op complication rate had been well over average for some months.

And when I say sacked- he was banned from the theatres and shoved into a research post (he was best mates with the head of the unit)

He was weird. He would storm in and scream at me and demand I was sacked at least twice a week because I couldn't transcribe his tapes properly (He had a thick accent and didn't try...one day I asked several other people to listen to what he was saying and we all agreed it sounded like he was saying "In the kitchen with a boy and two camels having toffee!"

Then one Monday he stormed in ready to scream at me and I wasn't there so he snarled "Where is she?!"

And Cherie said "She won't be in this week her mum died yesterday afternoon"

He apparently stopped dead and went "Not her mum that's so sad" and burst into years

And the next week when I got back there was a lovely condolence card and flowers from him on my desk

And 10 minutes later he stormed in demanding I get sacked...

I don't understand - however "urgent" it may be, don't you have the
right to refuse ANY surgery or medical procedure? (So long as you are
of legal age and able to communicate?)

Yes, that's true but having a partially dislocated fracture of the neck
which could have slipped any time and paralysed me put me in a difficult
position about refusing what the surgeon decided to do. Apparently, special
tools have to be acquired and this particular operation can only be done
once a fortnight on a Monday. Maybe he decided to do it on the Friday (we
never see consultants appearing at our bedside at the weekend) and just
forgot to tell the nursing staff to advise me.
Anyway, it was a good thing. Eventually. I was more disabled by having to
be flat on my back for a month to recover. I could hardly walk when I came
out of hospital in March and had to be cared for until July. I will never
completely recover the use of my right hand but I've learnt to write again
with different fingers involved. My occupational therapist does not like
this but my surgeon says it's fine to write any way I can.
Not being able to write..imagine that.
