Default [OT] Age Appropriate Dress?

Oh, I always KNEW the catalog and the stores had no
connection - both store personnel and the catalog customer service would
tell you so. However, I don't think that's any longer true - the stores
may not have access to the same merchandise, but one offered me a discount
coupon for my catalog order, if I couldn't find what I wanted in their
store. I used to buy a lot of clothes from Roaman's, which seemed
slightly better quality merchandise (but they are no longer a separate
entity - at least they come under the "Brylane" umbrella, along with
various catalogs for menswear, home furnishings and kitchenware).
Speaking of larger fashions, Old Pueblo (in Arizona) has a plus-size
catalog called "Regalia" (although that's pretty conservative i style).
There's a company called "Silhouettes" and another called "Just My Size"
which offer somewhat "younger" fashions (at slightly higher prices - which
might mean better quality). They have web-sites, but I don't have ther
URL's among my bookmarks. Lerner's have a "Jessica London" catalog for
women's sizes, too, but judging from the Lerner web-site, they're ALL
connected to "Brylane"! (But then, since the merger of May Co. and
Federated Dept. Stores last year, no matter what large department store
you go to, they're ALL under the same ownership, now - Macy's,
Famous-Barr, Filene's, whatever..... they may not bother to rename them,
but the ownership is the same for all of them.)

True about the mergers. Thanks for the tips though I'll check
out all those places online, because of the dearth of stores
in this area.

As most of you know, I was very overweight most of my life. I too used
to *try* to shop in plus size catalogues. However, it used to drive me
absolutely bonkers that all the models in there were no more than a size
8! I knew that anything that made those skinny-minnies look fat would
make me look like a house. But even when something looked nice on a
model, I never knew how it would actually look on me - all of the models
were at least 80 - 100 pounds thinner than me! Did they think that
heavier models would make the clothes look bad and nobody would buy
them??! If so they weren't giving women enough credit for having even
two brain cells connected - and even less self-esteem!

Very true about the catalogs: in its ads, Avenue pretty much uses
"plus-size"
professional models, but the skinny ones are sprinkled in here and there.
From your pics it would appear you dress much more conservatively than

I *have* to! I'm 54 years old and I just lost over 100 pounds - my skin is
pooling around my ankles - I wouldn't subject that sight on anyone!!! ;

I do (Avenue is very trendy/faddy/fashionista; LB much less so) but I
really don't like buying clothes from catalogs because as you point out,
you never know what something will look like on YOU instead of either
in a drawing, photo, or a model 100# less than you, LOL......

Since you mention the "plus-size" catalogs: I'm pretty much
limited to LaneBryant stores here (not as "trendy" as Avenue,
sometimes downright stodgy clothes) but Avenue has NO
stores in this state and online is how you gotta get their
faddish stuff (I like). I was shocked to learn from LB's
website (they are owned by some Penn. clothing
conglomerate) that they have *no connection whatsoever*
with the LB catalog! Check it out for yourself...I will never
buy anything again from the LB catalog, and had noticed
over years that stuff from that catalog I'd ordered was
always of inferior quality.

You might also look at Ulla Popken. Lands End also carries womens
sizes and I've found it to be a good source of very basic jeans and
tee's. For active wear, I like a company called Junonia. They have
everything, even ski wear, in large sizes.

"Velour tracksuit" - how times change! It wasn't so very
long ago that those two words would NEVER appear together.
Velour and velvet/velveteen were reserved for dressy clothes
(and denim was strictly for sportswear). Now you see velour
tracksuits and denim formal gowns!

I'm proud that I don't remember those times.

In fact, I remember wearing velour clothing as a kid, so I associated
it with kids' clothes. I was delighted to find this tracksuit so cheap
and in my size...SO FLUFFIE!! Back to the delights of pettable
clothing!

I like textured clothes and one of my female classmates cannot overcome
the urge to touch whatever I'm wearing to class...*l*

Workout wear and t-shirts, the difference being that a "Juicies" brand
tracksuit is $300, whereas I got a nice velour set at Stitches for $20.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Some people simply have too much money.

$300 is almost less than we pay for our yearly Y membership...to think
that people pay that for workout wear is obscene.

What do you guys think? Should you not wear a mini skirt - even if
you have killer legs - past a certain age?

I think that's crap, you should wear what you're comfortable in and what
makes you feel good. The only objection I have is to women who have
that "muffin top" thing going on. You know, love handles and gut
hanging way over their low rise jeans. There's no need for that. But
other than that, I think people should wear what they want! I can tell
you, I'm not going to suddenly stop wearing work out clothes (my main
wardrobe staple!) in 7 years, the day I hit 40! Sheesh!

Women here tend not to wear sleeveless blouses without a jacket.

Although in the new workplace one of the princesses wears a thong
(yes with pants, very tight pants), but it still seems a bit much to
me. We even had a bare midriff one day. I guess I'm just getting old.

Well, tight pants is what you *should* wear a thong with because
otherwise you get panty lines which are very unattractive. Of course
the thong shouldn't show over the waistband of the pants either. And
whether skin tight pants are appropriate for the workplace, is another
matter altogether...

It's about taste--esthetic taste--and what looks good on your body.
Period. I have always erred on the side of loose, lightweight clothes
in hot weather--short sleeves but not sleeveless, nothing skin tight.
It just makes sense to me to leave a bit to the imagination--on many
levels.

Fashion is artificial. The entire idea of fashion is stupid. What's "in"
this year is for idiots. Yes, I said IDIOTS. Just another form of
one-upmanship combined with comformism. What a charming
combination.

Regarding miniskirts and tanks, lingerie in public and such: I would
argue that most women are not nearly honest enough with themselves
to know if they really look good in these things, regardless of age.
One thing is for su MOST women do not look good in these
things, at any age. I cringe at women who insist on trying to look
16 at 30 or 40. It is just sad. I have had friends say, "I guess really
I have not changed at all since High School and I am horrified. Like
that is a good thing? Eckkk.

Ob: expensive clothes: conspicuous consumption is bad form,
though I do love fine things and will sometimes pay for the quality
I want. I will not pay for the latest trend. I will pay for good leather,
good cotton linens, etc. Quality that will last, not something to show
up the neighbors.
