Default Confessions of a Non-Cook [OT]

OK, this may shock some of you, so sit down before reading on...

I hate to cook. Yes, I *HATE* to cook. My DH says that I'm a very good
cook (I think he is only trying to get out of cooking duties when he says
this) - so he forces me, every year, to cook Thanksgiving dinner (turkey,
stuffing starting with cornbread made from scratch, mashed potatoes, giblet
gravy, creamed peas, candied yams, etc.). I usually start all this
Wednesday afternoon, cook all evening, then get up a 5AM on Thanksgiving and
cook all day, then spend all Thanksgiving evening cleaning the kitchen - a
*NIGHTMARE* for someone who *HATES* to cook.

So this year I pulled an end-around before DH insisted that I cook. I
called "Boston Market" and ordered their pre-cooked turkey dinner!!!! An
11-pound turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread, giblet gravy, and a pecan pie -
all for $49, serves 12 (itty-bitty eaters I'm guessing since 11 pounds is
*NOT* a big turkey). You pick it up at 9AM on Thanksgiving morning, stick
it in the oven for 2 hours and voila! Thanksgiving dinner!

ducking OK, it may not taste as good, but *I'M FREE*!!!!!!!!!

Hugs,

CatNipped

Cooking a big holiday meal is way too much work and stress to do it if you
don't like to cook. I'd probably give myself a heart attack trying to get
everything done.

If my husband tried to "force" me to cook anything ... well, it doesn't really
matter, because he'd never dare to try. We each cook when we want to, and
there are plenty of yummy restaurants to fill in the gaps.

I think you made a great call.

BE CAREFUL! Make sure it's a fully cooked dinner!

My mom did the same thing back around 1984. Kroger advertised a complete
Thanksgiving meal. Turkey, dressing, right down to the pie. My brother
Scott and I went to the store with her, picked up this box. We get home...
inside was a FROZEN uncooked turkey, cartons of frozen dressing, frozen
mashed potatoes, frozen gravy, frozen pie. Would have taken two days (not 2
hours) to thaw and cook this stuff.

We immediately took it back to the store. My mom is normally a very quiet,
rather obsequious person. Not this time! She let the manager HAVE IT! How
dare you?

We drove to another store and bought steaks. Had steak & baked potatoes for
Thanksgiving dinner.

I am not a fan of cooking either. Thankfully, we've changed our traditions.

My family emmigrated from England to Australia in 1975. For the first 10 or
so Christmasses, my poor mother slaved away in the kitchen, sometimes on
days that were well over 100F, trying to cook the traditional English
Christimas dinner (served at midday) of roast pork (they don't tend to do
goose or duck out here), roast vegies, boiled puddings etc etc.

Then we were invited to the Christmas parties of people born in Australia,
and to them a Christmaslunch is full of salads, seafood and most of all
*fruit*, because all the stone fruit and the prawns, lobsters, balmain bugs
and oysters are in season at Christmas here.

Now we have a wonderful cold smorgasbord (minus the seafood, non of my
family like it much), Mum doesn't have to slave in the kitchen for days over
a hot oven, its quicker to clean up (especially now we use paper plates
andplastic cutlery) and its far quicker to digest - especially since you
really want to go swimming if at all possible. Trying to swim on a stomach
full of heavy pudding and roasted stuff would be a recipe for disaster, I'm
sure!.

And we don't celebrate thanksgiving here.

Good for you! There's no reason that you should have to get all stressed
out over Thanksgiving dinner. If your cooking one meal a year makes him
happy then it should be a normal, everyday meal rather than a big holiday
extravaganza. That way you're not TOO unhappy and he should be satisfied.
