Has anyone heard from Britta?
I don't post often but I've been lurking a long time and I'd swear that
Britta is in the area of that huge earthquake/tsunami. Am I wrong? |

I hoped she was on the "safe" side. I agree the coverage is terrifying.
Thanks for the update! |

Hi! Yeah, I'm around :-) Feeling very lucky that we got back from
our scuba diving trip a week before it happened. But feeling very saddened by the loss of life and the destruction of such a beautiful area. As well as the devastation to all the other countries, of course. It's not looking good for the dive operators we dove with. The town they are based out of is Khao Lak and lately there have been reports that it is pretty much wiped out. The boat trip schedule would have had them out in the Similan Islands when it happened, but I'm not sure if they were far enough out to see to not have been affected. I can't watch Thai TV because I can't understand anything, so I'm just getting my info from BBC and CNN. I have sent them an email and got no reply and I phoned but the phones are down. It's all just so unbelievable :-( -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. I have an alarm clock that's covered in fur! She is on the other side where it is safe. They had been in Puhket just last week. She checked in yesterday. I saw more coverage today. Terrifying. Yes it is. About half an hour ago they said the total was up to 50,000, and that resulting illnesses could easily double that. Scary! Joy |

Their dive master didn't even realize what had happened when they started in to shore - when they first started seeing debris in the water he thought it was trash from another boat. It took a text message from the DM's wife to clue them in. They were diving off of Ko Phi Phi Island in Thailand, but doesn't say where they were staying (their hotel is gone) or where the boat was operating from. I don't recall where your vacation was at Jeanne Hedge, as directed by Natasha ============ http://www.jhedge.com |

Have you seen this site Britta:

I don't recall where your vacation was at I heard a similar story from a friend who had friends who were scuba diving while it happened. But still, a bunch of divers are missing from what I last heard. I guess it depends on how close to the shore you were and how exposed the area was, etc. We were diving in the Similan Islands, which are about 100 miles or so north of Phuket and even more north of Koh Phi Phi. The town we left from, Khao Lak, is almost completely wiped out. CNN spent all day reporting from there about how bad it is. Dennis and I spent the afternoon of Dec. 13th having lunch and beers on the beach and walking up and down the beach. The dive boat left at about 8 pm but only drove a little ways off shore, then it began driving at 11 pm for about 5 hours to the Similan Islands. We got back on the afternoon of the 17th and stayed the night in a hotel which was a few hundred yards from the beach. We left at noon the next day. The town was basically just a road that ran parallel with the beach, wide open to the waves. I still can't believe that all those resorts, restaurants, shops, etc... are gone...and all those people. shudder I am going to Bangkok for the New Year and while there I'm going to see what I can do to help out...make donations, etc. -- Britta Sandpaper kisses, a cuddle and a purr. Like I mentioned in another post a lot of Swedish tourists were vacationing there so Khao Lak is mentioned on the news here all the time. We can just hope that more people will be found to have escaped to higher land, and eventually make contact with those missing them. All the survivors in Thailand keep mentioning how the Thai people have helped them and given them food, clothes and money, even when they hardly have had anything left themselves and also have lost so much. Please let your Thai freinds know that this is heard and appreciated by everyone "at home" too - all around the world. -- :: lewe ------------------------------------------------------------- lewemi at yahoo dot se || cat pics: photos.yahoo.com/lewemi |
