Cats and houseplants
Has anyone found a way to mix houseplants and house cats successfully?
I have three indoor kitties who love to chew on, play with, and dig up the few plants I've managed not to kill through general plant-keeping incompetence. At this point, I'm keeping the plants in my bathroom and trying to keep the cats out of that room except when I'm around to supervise. I'd love to be able to have more plants in other places around the house. TIA Peggy A house with a cat needs no art -- Japanese saying |

At home though, I have one on a shelf that is so covered with teddy bears that there is no room for a cat to jump up there. The others are Christmas cacti and they are in stand-alone planter baskets that are about 3' high and no one messes with them. I'm like you, I'd like to have more plants, but even flowers in a vase get chewed on so I just pass on that. -- Cheryl Trapped like rats. In a chia-pet. MIB II |

But first make sure none of the plants in your home are toxic to cats. http://maxshouse.com/Poisonous_Plants%20_IDX_Common.htm |

On 14 Feb 2004 16:06:00 -0800, (Peggy L) Perhaps if they had their own plants: kitty grass and catnip, it would take away their interest in yours. I've heard totally differing opinions about this...on the one hand, that cats benefit from some fresh green plant matter and, on the other, that they are pure carnivores and green plants don't do them any good. I'd be interested in hearing about anyone's experience with this, either way. Thanks, Peggy |

At home though, I have one on a shelf that is so covered with teddy bears that there is no room for a cat to jump up there That's an approach I'd been considering--I even have a plentiful supply of teddy bears! I think what I need is wire shelving that doesn't offer a cat much of a surface to stand on. That and the teddy bears will probably do it. Thanks! pl |
