Barn kitties
I mentioned I'm taking lessons and the lady has three barn kitties that for
me are much too inquisitive. I know they will grow out of having to play in the arena where we ride, but right now, they like nothing better than to follow us in and wrestle in the dirt! While walking I wasn't nervous because I could avoid them easily but I worried now that we were trotting. So they got locked in the tack room. When we unsaddled, my instructor says, "Where are those kittens? I know they can't get out of here." There they were, all cuddled together sleeping on top of a saddle and matt in the middle of the saddle tree! Karen |

Nikki was born in the back room of a stables, and she was the first of the litter to venture out among the horses (that should have given me a hint of her fearless character). My hair stands on end every time I think of little bitty Nikki among all those horse hooves, but apparently, she made it. ;o) -- Marina, Frank and Nikki marina (dot) kurten (at) pp (dot) inet (dot) fi |

But if it makes you feel any better, I've *never* had a barn cat stepped on. I imagine if they survive kittenhood, they learn to stay out of the way! Sherry |

Miles at wrote on 9/29/03 7:38 AM: Where I used to keep my horse there were about 20 very friendly barn cats. It used to be REALLY off-putting in a jumping lesson - you'd be going over a big spread jump (and my horse was a BIG boy at 16.2hh)and there would be a kitty using the *litter box* directly under the jump. Those cats were fearless, and IIRC not once was there an accident where a cat was stepped on or hurt by a horse. I think the cutest thing was when the cats used to curl up in the small of the horses back on top of the rugs in winter - It was so cute to see a thundering great brute of a horse with a tiny cat curled up asleep in its back. Helen M I guess I just have to get used to it! Karen |
