Is there something about cats can't eat dog food or dogs can't eat cat food,
or shouldn't? Seems I heard something like that.

I want Sadie to eat dry, not wet all the time. Have tried three kinds and
she won't eat the dry. Tonight, I heard her chomping away on the cat food.
Which, by the way some cat had pushed to the edge of their table so she
could reach it. Thought I remembered something about one shouldn't eat one
or the other.

Confused, yepper.

Hi Grandby -- IIRC, it's okay for dogs to eat cat food (probably not
an ideal steady diet though :-)
But you're not supposed to let cats eat dog food, I think it's because
it's very lacking in some major nutrients that are necessary to a cat.
Taurine is probably one of them.
I haven't googled, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this the
way I seem to remember it.

That is good to hear, maybe I can buy some dog food in smaller pieces and
introduce it into her food, and if I sit it on the table with the other, she
may not know she is being hoodwinked! RIGHT!! The cats will tell.

Cat food is much higher in protein than dog food. Regular snacking on
cat food will trash a dogs kidneys. (With a big dog like Sadie it
will also trash your budget)

Dogs love it unfortunately, and more than one cat has learned to push
it to where the dog can reach it. And a little won't hurt them. Cat
kibble makes a great training treat for a dog.

Dogs aren't usually so fussy about what they will eat. Though I'm
guessing Sadie got spoiled with 'people food' while she was on her own
by a rest stop.

Sometimes you can get them to eat kibble by moistening it.

Not all kibble is created equal. Our next door neighbor couldn't get
her BC to eat dry food, until she found out he would eat dry food all
the time when he came over here to visit Kayla.

We have always fed only Nutro kibble since we got our first dog nearly
forty years ago. I buy several of their different 'flavors' since
Charlie is afraid Kayla will get bored.

She likes the puppy food best, followed by lamb, followed by venison.
(The puppy food is only a treat, a bag we got for my daughters dogs.
It might hook Sadie though if she needs to put on weight)

Nutro makes a 'mini' chuck kibble for dogs that prefer that.

Thanks will give the kibble a try. Scooter (RB) would eat any kind of food.
Sadie just, like you said, got spoiled that month she was at the rest area.
Until we caught her, she never left the area where she must have gotten
left. I still can't believe no one has called the state police about her.

She goes to the vet in a week to "get fixed".

I think it's probably the same in both directions. A dog can have cat
food occasionally and it won't hurt them, but if it ate cat food every
day that would probably be hard on a dog's kidneys - their kidneys aren't
build for all that protein.

A cat can have dog food occasionally, too, but a diet consisting
exclusively of dog food would be very bad - the cat would be malnourished.
They wouldn't get enough protein. And yeah, they wouldn't get taurine, a
very bad thing.

Dogs can eat cat food but it isn't _ideal_ for them on a regular
basis. For one thing, it is richer and lacks vegetable bulk. Dogs need
ruffage, just like primates. Or at least it makes their lives more
regular. Our Maggy May (and sometimes Sunrise) pushes food _off_
their counter for Bear if he barks at them nicely and their is plenty
of "fudz." They do NOT do this with canned food; he can say anything
he wants. Dogs can also eat dropped parrot food. Especially peanuts.
He takes the shell off quite handily but leaves it on the floor. I
wonder if the combination of cat food (mostly meat or fish) and parrot
food (seeds and nuts and fruit) is a good diet for a dog. But he gets
dogfood also.

Someone suggested water on the kibble. Snowball (RB) wasn't a problem
eater but she would _dance_ when she saw me putting warm water and and
a little ketchup on her kibble. She clearly liked it better than any
canned food when I did that and it's only rival was
"whateveryoureating."

People sometimes don't believe that cats push food off for dogs.
"Will in New Haven"

We had a dog when my MIL was living with us and sick, she had a cat. The
cat would carry pork chops or chicken to the edge of the table and drop it
literally in the dogs mouth.

Will mix cat food and dog food, smaller pieces for a bit and see if that
works.

It is funny to watch a dog crack a p-nut and take the shell off. nOT SO
FUNNY TO STEP ON IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!

Thanks, will try that. I don't have ketchup, only salsa!
