Default Sammy update

It dawned on me that we used to have a Maine Coon resident here named
Sammy, but mine is a male, short for Samurai. Anyway, he's been
throwing up something horrible lately. He started pretty much after
California Natural discontinued cat food and I was forced to switch the
dry everyone nibbles on.

So I've switched twice now for the dry and now they get Blue Buffalo
Sensitive Stomach, and the canned has always been Fancy Feast. Since he
never seemed to have a problem with FF in the 2 years he's been my owner
I didn't think it was that. But after switching 2x the dry food, I
decided I can switch the wet he eats and got something that is duck and
potato. He's had full blood workup within the last week and it is all
completely normal including kidney function so vet said try again
switching food. What a royal pain since CA Natural was one everyone
agreed with. So purrs for Sammy please? Need to stop this vomiting!
Poor kitty! He had a little break when TED gave me some antinausea med
for him but it can't be used long term. Today after 4 days on the med
and just 2 off, which worked like a charm, he threw up. Not as bad as
some previous days where he'd throw up multiple times for hours. It is
THAT BAD. Next step will be an internal medicine vet and for sure I'm
not taking him to the one who nearly killed Shadow several times. Yeah,
unfortunately she's still around and the one my regular vet refers all
her clients to go to when they need a specialist.

Thank you Joy. I need to find out if we can just do either a sonogram or a biopsy but I have a feeling they're going to want both. *sigh*

Loving these little critters can bring us a lot of worry and expense,
but they're worth it.

Selina has that same problem, and it occurs with every food (canned
only) I have tried. She seems to be in perfect health otherwise, but
she throws up approximately 2x per week. It is always about 15-30
minutes after eating, and it is semi-digested food (never any fur
balls). After that, she eats normally for the rest of the day and does
not have any problems.

The one thing that helped Selina--even though it has not stopped it
completely--was when I changed to 3 meals per day instead of 2 meals.
The total quantity is the same, just smaller meals. Have you ever tried
that?

Good luck with Sammy!

Thanks Judith. He's still throwing up a little, and we definitely need
to be more aggressive figuring out what is wrong with him. But he is
throwing up maybe once a day instead. I've been trying canned food with
limited ingredients and made for easy digestion to see if that helps.

I'm hoping we can make it until after Christmas and then make some
specialist appointments.

Purrs for Sammy Samurai, absolutely!

And, this is not a query directed towards you, Cheryl, just a question
in general. I don't understand how people with multiple cats can
regulate feeding different types of food. Without segregating the cats,
I mean.

When I used to cat sit for my neighbor she'd tell me this cat gets this
much of this food, the other cat gets that food. But they both ate in
the same room. How was I supposed to know whether or not they were
nipping into each others food bowls? "Cat sitting" didn't mean I was
there watching them all day long. It has always been a mystery to me:
how do you keep the other cats from eating the other food?

Short answer, you can't. I have this discussion with the vet every time
she says to try a diet trial. Even recently Scarlett was restricted to
canned food only because she had 2 teeth removed, and there was a lot of
infection cut out during surgery so dry food would not just be hard to
eat, but could get in the wound and cause infection. I had to keep her
in my room at night and shoo her from the dry food at breakfast and
dinner because I didn't want to have to close her out all day every day
for 2 weeks. It was nearly impossible and if I wasn't able to work from
home I'm not sure I could have done it. As it was, she was very mad at
me for not letting her have crunchy food. She acted like she thought I
hated her. She made it through and she healed. Not to say she didn't
sneak a kibble every now and then but she made it through.

For longer term and limited to just one food I'm not sure how to do it
other than put the bowl of food under Sammy when he decides to switch to
another bowl. They have been eating the canned food mostly in one
sitting these days because I've cut back, and offer more if they want
it. So the canned I don't want him to eat isn't sitting out.

Quite honestly, I have always found that impossible. I have 3 cats, and
none of them finish a meal at one "sitting." They will eat part of
their food and then return later. So, I could segregate one (as you
said) on a temporary basis, but otherwise find it impossible to use
different food for individual cats. I can medicate individual cats, but
it isn't practical (for me) to put out different food for one cat.

I think the only way you could do it would be to feed them all at a
specific time, shutting each in a separate room until they were through
eating. This wouldn't work for a grazer, of course.

This definitely would not work for me. I have a lot of back pain and
also have vertigo (most of the time), so it is already difficult for me
to feed the three cats and clean their litter boxes. I have to take a
great deal of care when bending down for those tasks, so carrying their
food to separate rooms (and back to clean the bowls) would be almost
impossible. In addition, none of the cats finish eating on a schedule.
