I wanted to repair my 18-year-old fridge-freezer. "Cosmetic"
damage only, it still cools and freezes. I needed new flaps,
hinges, drawer fronts, and one drawer runner for the freezer, and
two new salad crisper drawers for the fridge. These are all
plastic trim pieces - not expensive?Think again. Nearly two
hundred pounds for those few bits. A new appliance was only 50%
more - no contest, but now I'm adding to the landfill.

You shouldn't be- under EEC regulations- the fridge has to be
recycled- when we got the one we have now- the company we got it from
had to take the old one away and recycle it

I would have thought the same of me, until we moved into this house.
It has one bathroom that is very small (about 6'x8') and when we
first moved in it had a square shower stall on the short wall, with
the toilet right next to it. The walls were black tile and so was the
floor.

It was like trying to pee in a coffin.

All the same- some people have to pee in a lot worse places than
that- like their own water supply

All the same I can agree with you on that one

OK, so it's being recycled ("disposal" by the new supplier). I
know far too much about the WEEE Regulations, ROHS, and CFC
recycling / disposal, unfortunately. But I'm sure some of the old
fridge will end up in landfill, eventually.

I know you're a civil servant- do you by any chance work for the DoE?

LOL! My response was usually "Then send it to THEM!" Actually, growing
up during the "Great Depression", I was brought up to eat whatever I was
served - simply because if I didn't, I went hungry until the next meal.
(It works with cats, too.)

Are you SURE? Here in the U.S. most companies will haul away the old
appliance (or other bulky furniture), too, but I think it is simply as a
"courtesy" - I seriously doubt many such items get recycled. (But then,
the U.S. seems much less "ecology conscious" than the rest of the world.)

I priced a part for my vacuum cleaner, which must be as old as your
fridge. I'm still dithering about it. I could buy one of those new
lightweight ones for the same amount - less if I hit a good sale! Of
course, I'm sure it wouldn't last as long.

Formerly DTI, now DIUS. An Agency of DIUS is responsible for
enforcement of the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
legislation, and had input to the Regulations that enact the WEEE
Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equpment) in the UK.

Ob cats: The 90-acre Government Estate I manage has several
visiting friends - some vocal, demanding skritches - others
somewhat wary of hoomins. I usually get a daily dose of felines
at work :-)
