Cats and Appetite Loss

My ten year old, Angel, had recently been vomiting, lost alot of weight, etc.
From experience with previous cats I concluded that she was either suffering
from CRF or hyperthyroid. I gave her a tiny bit of a Xanax pill and the
vomiting stopped and it also gave her a tremendous appetite. You can also
try Valium. Both of these are prescription people drugs. She has been to
the vet and we are waiting for lab results. In the meantime, though, this is
helping her.

That's great, but if she is under a vet's care, why wouldn't you ask the
vet what to give her for nausea and vomiting?

I think it is a really bad idea to recommend giving cats things that
are prescribed for humans unless the vet directs you to, don't you?

How did you know that Xanax was not toxic to cats? Are you sure that
valium is okay? And if you were not sure, how could you take that chance?
Or did you forget to mention that you checked first with your vet and he
said both drugs were just fine, and advised you on dosage?

Valium can crash a cat's liver. You might want to speak to your vet about
switching to Phenobarbital (1-2.5 mg/kg PO q12h) -- its the first choice
drug for seizures in cats.

Cats may exhibit changes in behavior (irritability, depression, aberrant

therapy. Cats to receive diazepam should have baseline liver function tests.



Adverse Effects Sedation is the most common side effect. May cause
paradoxical excitement in dogs. Causes polyphagia. In cats, idiopathic fatal

My now 6 year old rumble spent 6 months trying to get regulated. The
Phenobarbital is the first choice yes. It turned out he was allergic to it,
made him literally rip his face off down to the bone in some places. Would
not stop scratching or chewing. He tore up a a-collar scratching so hard.
My vet has a partner trained in feline seizures disorder. After all the
specialist work up test ( a whooping $3500 Rumble is worth every penny ) his
friend told us diazepam or valium can be used as long as you watch his
levels. He old me the side effects that day I swear I did not sleep for 4
days straight. I was never more than 3 feet from him for the warning time.
I was shaking from lack off sleep when we took him back to have the blood
levels checked.

His first noticed seizure was Oct 3 2002, his last seizure was in
February 14, 2003 No seizures since than his levels are perfect every time.
There has been problems since most epileptic suffer from something nicknamed
the itches. He would lick off his hair and scratch till blood ran. Well a
cortisone shots 10 cc , several times antibiotics and dermal crème. It has
been over 3 years he is just now back to his old self. He is now a talker
and wants to be near me and in my site at all times. If I leave I can find
him waiting on my bed or right near it on top off the cable converter. He
waits till I am sitting comes up to me puts his paw on my arm or shoulder
and mews to let me know his is there and wants a treat or loving most of the
times both. God I love this cat as much as my better half

He gets full work up and blood work every three months he takes 2 mg of
diazepam 2x a day he was taking 5mg all at once but it made him a little to
sleepy. The vet told me the medicine might take a few years off his life
but ever since that day I saw that seizure happen and thought I was going to
have to put him to sleep. I cherish every moment I have and thank who ever
or what ever is watching over me and my family every day for each day he
and they are here. I still misty eyes thinking about that day. It is a
story I will gladly share when asked

Sorry, forgot to mention I checked with my vet. She checked it out for me.
Also forgot to mention that I have medical training myself...oops. I would
NEVER give something to my little Angel that would hurt her.

Angel update...turns out she had an infection and is on antibiotics now. She
seems to be doing much better today.
