This is a big success AND very English.

One is planned for my city, Vancouver, and will somehow reflect our
West Coast love of animals. i think there will be more of a tie-in
with humane education and cat adoption centres.

Very sweet. I'm not quite sure why my name is in the subject line.

Your name was in the subject line for the same reason a snailmail
letter addressed to you and posted has your name and address on it.
You're the intended message recipient.

Oh, I looked up the cat cafe in Paris and the one in London seems far,
far superior in every way.

Here is Paris. Not bad but not up to London standards.

You sent me snail mail? No one (from rfc) sends me snail mail outside
of the holiday cards thing.

I don't speak French but nice pictures of the cafe kitties. There
are no cat cafes where I live. I've seen a few "shop cats" over the
years but not in places that serve food or beverages.

He was just making an analogy. Your name was in the subject line because
he was directing the post to you. Same reason that your name WOULD be on
a snailmail envelope, IF he were sending you mail through the postal service.

There's supposed to be one in the SF Bay Area sometime soon!

That makes sense, sort of. Except I'm not in England. Chances are I
never will be. I'd have read about the cat cafe regardless.

Bastette, I heard there would be 2 in the Bay Area - Oakalnd and San
Francisco. The Oakland one will be somewhere near Jack London Square
and the SF one where they can get the best lease. No site for the
Vancouver one yet.

And Jill, when you replied to an earlier post directed at UK people
who live near London, I thought you were a United Kingom resident.
Honest mistake.

If? Not going isn't an option. And I'll definitely report on it when
I do.

It's not open yet. The US has strict laws regarding animals in a place
where food is prepared. (Some people get all fussy about the idea of eating
something that a cat has touched, go figure. ) Last I heard, which was
pretty recently, they've come up with a solution where there will be two
separate spaces, right next to each other, but with separate doors to the
outside. In one, you can buy food and drinks, and in the other, you can visit
the cats. I hope they'll let you bring your food into the cat space, or
what's the point? It's a cat *cafe*. Anyway, I think the laws pertain to
the preparation of food and not the consumption, so I imagine it will be
OK to bring your snacks into the cat side of the cafe.

Oh yeah, I heard about the Oakland one, too. But I don't know how far
along they are in the planning stage.

As for getting a lease in SF proper, good luck with that. I don't know what
business rentals are going for these days, but the rents for residential
apartments in San Francisco are *insane*. Seriously, it's crazy. I've never
seen anything like it. Just the other day I heard about a 3-bedroom apartment,
in a decent but not especially upscale neighborhood, renting for $5000/month.
*Not a typo*!!

It's not nearly as bad in the East Bay*, but as people who are priced out
of renting in SF move eastward, I assume it will get worse. Rents have
already gone up quite a bit.

(* "East Bay": this refers to cities that are near the San Francisco Bay,
on the east side of it. SF is on the west side.)
