Default B & C - Their first Mouse!

I felt sad when I found the mouse, its little body all chewed up on the
floor. They had taken one ear off completely and it was munched up in
little bits. The tail was completely chewed and wet, horrible. I
cradled it gently in my hands, it was so beautiful and fragile.
Sometimes I hate the destruction done by cats. My other mouse watched
me from the shadow box - it was a delicate creature made of one large
shell with two small shells forming the ears. I shifted it to a higher
shelf!

You had me worried there for a bit that you had actually picked up a
mangled mouse in your bare hand. Poor little mouse, but at least his
little buddy is safe until B & C learn to climb to the higher shelf.

But of course, THEY don't think of it as "destruction" - hunting and
killing smaller creatures is part of being a cat. (That's one reason
abandoned cats can somewhat survive, forced to turn feral.) If cats and
humans were to suddenly switch sizes, how safe would any of us feel with
our cherished feline companions - no matter how affectionate and gentle
they seem now?

When I buy new mouse toys for TuTu, the first thing she does is bite
off the tails.

I keep a cage, some hamster food and cedar bedding handy. When I find a
mouse, (which has been every day, lately) it is usually reclining in
what is commonly called the "tits up" position. Most of the time they
are still alive, but if I toss them back outside again they will just
die where they fall.

After a meal and a good nights sleep in the cage, they usually perk up.
I mark them with a sharpie then release them by the wood pile so the
cats can hunt them down again.

The dead ones I just toss in the garbage or give to the ferals.

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter -- bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

I had the opposite reaction, Marina. I thought back to the autumn
pictures and stories of B&C, and since it's autumn again (for us), it
keeps making me think that they're 1.5 years old instead of 1.0.

Or learn that the mice they're supposed to catch are the
furry ones in the kitchen, not the decorative ones in the
shadow box!
