my boyfriend had become allergic to Shaina. damn sensitization!
over the past 2 months he has been getting more and more allergic to
her. he is not going into an anaphylactic shock, or anything like
that, but it's pretty bad. is there anything we can do to help him
with that? i have something to wipe her down with, called Simple
Solution that needs to be used weekly. i don't think it's helping.
the only thing that helps him is bennadryl and that knocks him out.
we are not giving her away. any other allergy sufferers here? how
did you deal with that?

Many people who are allergic to cats, including myself, are allergic to a
protein in their saliva, not their actual fur (they wash themselves and get
saliva on their fur). Severe allergy sufferers are almost guaranteed to be
allergic to that protein, which gets all in the fur and dander of the cat.

I assume you vaccuum regularly (once a week minimum) and change your bedding
weekly. Clothes should only be worn once, then washed. If you don't do these
things, start.

Bathe the cat once every week for the next 3 weeks. In the bathtub with puppy
shampoo (make sure it's tearless!!) so she really gets clean but her skin
doesn't suffer from overdrying. Reduce bathing to once every 2-3 weeks after
that and that should help a lot. Those wipes get off dirt all right, but the
kitty spit lingers. *LOL*

If she licks him at all, stop letting her. No kitty kisses for him, at least
until he starts getting marked improvement and can handle a bit of it.
Wash your hands after handling her. You touch her, then you touch him, and he
gets the protein on him. He should wash after handling her as well.

It's all about reducing exposure to the protein.

And drugs. Try more drugs. You may find another that works well enough with
these additional measures without knocking him out. Experiment with cutting
the Benadryl in half or see if you can buy a lower dosage. The normal tabs
are 25mg. Phenadryl is the same ingredient (Diphenhydramine HCL) and comes
in a liquid form equivalent to a 10mg (5ml) dosage.

One of our foster's husband had severe allergies from cats - eyes puffed up,
sneezed to the point of blood. Two squirts of Flonase (steroid) (Rx) in
each nostril/b.i.d. - now he helps her with the cats. I think he's down to
only one squirt/nostril/b.i.d.

Flonase ain't cheap but it works. Most insurance plans cover it.

Zrytec. Have him go see a doctor and get on somehing like that. It won't
knock him out or he could even try the over the counter claritin.

they don't work. he can go through tons of those, but benadryl is
the only one that actually works well. he is taking singular
prophylactically, but apparently it doesn't do the trick.
i guess hepa filter is something we should look into.

You should have been using the filters before he went on the drugs.
That said, if Zyrtec or Claritin do not work it may not be the cats he is
allergic to. Benedryl is a far inferior antihistamine. Does he LIKE cats?

no, benadryl is actually a much stronger antihistamine. the good
thing about zyrtec, claritine and allergra is that they have hardly
any side effects. he LOVES her. he is sad because he can't picker
her up and pet her. he has this way of holding her on her arm that's
really cute. /sigh
