My parents had new neighbors in TN back around 1975 who invited them to a
"cocktail party". Turned out they were soliciting neighbors trying to sign
them up to sell Amway. They weren't nearly as cute as these cats are

There was a period of time around then that people wouldn't even go to
visit friends because they got so tired of the Amway ambushes. Ugh.
Still remember those.

Oh, Now you've got me feeling nostalgic.
Do you remember the sheet they handed out to explain why it wasn't
a "Pyramid scheme"? LOL!
If someone hands you a sheet explaining that it's not a pyramid
scheme........
It's a pyramid scheme.

Everyone who tried to sell it thought they were going to be a
millionaire.
Everyone I knew lost money.

What really got to me, the friend who tried to sell us on it was
trying to be so convincing on how it made your entire life tax
deductable. I'm a CPA. So was he. We worked together for heaven
sakes and he knew as well as I did that it wasn't legitimate.

Let's just say it didn't make them very popular in the neighborhood. Folks
went over expecting a cocktail or tea and some snacks and wound up getting a
sales pitch. Even if it wasn't multi-level marketing Amway products are way
over priced and really aren't that great.

Well, I was pretty well converted to their laundry detergent, when I
first encountered it. (Liked it much better than the supermarket
brands.) But then I found Trader Joe's, whose "Next to Godliness"
products were every bit as good as Amway for a fraction of the price.
(They seem to have discontinued that label, and changed their formulas,
but they're still as good as any, for less money.)

We've got similar products in the UK - Betterware and Avon...
Difference is, they just drop the catalogues off and you just give
them an order. The Avon woman can't understand why I order so much
"Avon Skin so Soft". I don't have the heart to tell her it's the best
fly repellant I've ever found for the horses!!

I've seen Amway here as well, my mother's cousin tried selling it for a
while.

They sell Avon's Skin So Soft over the counter in stores where I live now
because of mosquitos and tiny gnats (aka noseeums, because you can't see
them). This is the only place I've been where you didn't have to buy it
from an Avon Rep. It's an excellent bug repellant!

******

She probably already knows. It has quite a reputation as a mosquito
repellant.
