I use regular plastic cat litter boxes. How many cats do you have?

Rule of thumb for cats is 2 boxes per cat. I have 4 cats but 6 boxes no
more room for the other 2 ;-)

My two get along just fine with one box.

If I've mentioned this before, forgive; but I did want to say that
this about
litterboxes: Biskit would not use a litterbox. That's even back when I
had five boxes. She used the bath tub in the guest bathroom. When the
toddler grandson came to stay with us, I replaced the box in the
den with a covered box (for obvious reasons!) Anyway, after that,
Biskit used that box. She has never, ever reverted back to "going"
outside that box since. All that time, she just probably needed to
feel more secure while doing her business and I was too dumb to
realize it.
OTOH, I've had friends whose cats refused to use a covered box.

Okay. I guess it depends on the individual cats.

Ditto!

I've never heard the "2 boxes per cat" rule. What I have heard is "One
box per cat, plus an extra one". So 4 cats = 5 boxes. Two cats would mean
3 boxes, but where on earth would I put them? My place isn't big enough.
My cats don't have any issues with the litterbox at all, so one is enough.

Reading the various responses in this thread confirms what I have long
believed, about cats and people - one size does not fit all!

Our girls wouldn't be caught dead using a covered box. When I bought
one, they started peeing on an old (rolled up) rug instead!) When I
was too slow to catch on, Silver did it right in front of me... I
apologised to her profusely, restored the litterbox to its original
cover-free matless condition, and she never misbehaved again. I must
have the only claustrophobic cats in existence!
