I was reading an interview with actress Claudia Black (Aeryn Sun of "Farscape"), during which she commented about Aeryn's hair - "It was the most Gilroy that Aeryn looked, really, in season four." IIRC Ms Black is Australian, but I think her parents might be from the UK so I'm not sure where this bit of slang comes from. I'd hazard a guess that "looks like Gilroy" means "looks pretty bad", and comes from a reference to a famous Scottish boxer, Bert Gilroy. To say "looked like Gilroy" means you looked like you'd just been 10 rounds in the boxing ring. Well, whether or not your guess is right, the context certainly is. Aeryn's hair was *awful* in season 4. I guess "Gilroy" isn't common Australian slang then. Jeanne Hedge, as directed by Natasha ============ http://www.jhedge.com |

The phrase would be more of English origin, and most likely Claudia picked it up from her parents, rather than being something a relatively young Australian would say. I certainly hadn't heard it before, but there's lots of Region and/or Age specific Australian slang I have no idea about. Yoiwe --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. writes I'd love to go to the festival sometime, but I don't think I'd try everything - like the garlic ice cream! No such thing as too much garlic .... and garlic ice cream is lurrrrrvely. The Isle of Wight (island off the South coast of England) has a garlic festival in August each year; the island's climate is very good for growing garlic. Richard's sister lives on the island, so we pop over and visit her, and spend a day at the festival. Smoked garlic, ordinary garlic, garlic honey, garlic honey ice cream ..... (starts to drool unattractively) -- Cathi |
