Default Automatic door openers

I have automatic door openers for my cabinets. Well, actually, my door
openers have four legs, a tail, and glossy fur. I often find two or three
doors standing wide open in the kitchen or bathroom. It is usually Holly,
and for a long time I thought she was the only "culprit." Then I discovered
Duffy doing it!--He quickly stands on his hind legs, catches the top of the
door with his front legs, and backs up while dragging the door open. Then
he climbs inside the cabinet but only stays there momentarily. I guess they
are checking the contents to make sure nothing is amiss.

The only one of my doors ever opened by a cat was to the cabinet I call my
pantry. The doors are about six feet tall. Somehow, one of my RB cats (I'm
having a senior moment and can't remember which one) could, and often did,
open that door. I don't know how s/he did it, but I do know why. That's
where the cat food is kept.

Holly and Duffy seem to look on it as entertainment because they do it every
day. I will come home in the afternoon to find open doors, walk into the
bathroom to find an open door, and get up in the morning to be greeted by
open doors. They never do any damage--they just grab the top with their
claws and pull the doors open. I said they grab with their front "legs,"
but that obviously isn't quite how it's done. They wrap their paws over the
top and grab with their claws. They don't even scratch anything when they
do it.

We had to put baby locks on the cabinets to keep Sam out. He could
only open the doors on the left, but since they are normally in pairs
he got into everything.

Frank used to hate closed doors, and sometimes he would go on a rampage,
slamming open every single door in the flat. Cupboards, closets, doors
between rooms. Everything had to be wide open.

Duffy is an exceptional cat

Of course all cats are consummate cabinet door openers. When Persia first
came to me I had to put a latch on the pantry door in my apartment to keep
Persia out. That's where her kibble and her once weekly Fancy Feast was
stored

Sheer curiosity must have made her wonder what was behind the metal bi-fold
doors to where the washer & dryer were. There was nothing (to my way of
thinking) of interest for her in there. But she managed to open the door
and jump up on the dryer then down beside it. I guess she was exploring.
She got stuck because there wasn't enough room for her to jump back up! I
had to move the dryer to get her out. Then I had to put really large rubber
bands on the knobs on the bi-fold doors so she couldn't get back in there
again. I don't know what it was that interested her other than the closed
doors

The other night she was yowling at the door to the hall linen closet. She's
never shown any interest in that closet before but apparently she just
discovered "hey, there's a door here!" LOL I opened it for her, but it's
jam packed with linens and rolls of wallpaper my mother had left over and
other stuff I haven't even begun to dig into under the lower shelf. (heh)
There was no place for her to explore. She was satisfied that I opened the
closet door. She checked it out, realized there was no place she could go in
this mystery closet, and that was that

And there was me thinking, hoomins were automatic door openers. When
Snoopy still went outside she would rattle the cat flap to indicate she
wanted the door opened. :-)

I don't open doors for Holly and Duffy because they are indoor cats, but my
sister refers to me as "Holly and Duffy's canopener." :-)

If our living room door is shut and Dunzi is the other side of it she
knocks on the door with her paw to tell us to let her in

Buster likes to play this game. There was one set of cabinets that I
didn't want him to open though, because the plumbing under the sink
was done there, and there was a hole there that was large enough for a
cat to get into the walls. So I started putting a dustpan, then a
spare file drawer dowel propped up against it.

That made it confusing, and caused a clatter when they tipped over, so
Buster started leaving those doors alone.

There are a couple of doors that I routinely leave closed, and
sometimes the kitties act like those are the "out" and beg to have
them opened. They seem quite satisfied and happy too, when they
get to explore those rooms. One is an exercise room, and I usually
want to exclude those two from workout sessions.
