Hoosier's Sacrifice Helps Fellow Soldier
http://www.wishtv.com/Global/story.a...9&nav=0Ra6URLb
By Mary McDermott (Ellettsville-December 21, 2004) - Every day we stories of soldiers making sacrifices overseas. News 8 spoke to the family of an Elletsville, Indiana soldier whose sacrifice made a huge difference for another soldier's family. Sergeant Cathi Johnson has been serving in Afghanistan since mid-summer. Her family was looking forward to having her home for a few weeks at Christmas. "Just sit back and relax, and enjoy the time with her," said Greg Johnson, her husband. "Somebody knocked on my tent door...and they said, 'How set are you on going home?' And I said very well set. I'm set. I'm leaving Saturday. I was all excited, all packed. I'm ready to go," said Sgt. Johnson, on the phone from Afghanistan. Then she learned that another soldier in her unit had a daughter who needed serious surgery. That soldier couldn't get home because he didn't have a seat on a plane. Sgt. Johnson gave him her ticket. "I would hope that anybody else would have done the same thing," she said. Johnson's family knows not everybody would have. That's what makes them so proud of her. "She called me up and we discussed it and I was very proud of her decision. I love her very much. And even the decision she makes it was very noble of her. I'm very proud of her," said her husband. "She's always been kind to everybody and she's just a good-hearted girl. And it's the thing that she would do," said Henry Baugh, Johnson's father. "It was really sad that she couldn't come home because we miss her so much. But we were proud of her because she did what she did," said Irene Baugh, her mother. "She's just a hero and she was already a hero. This just confirms it more. For her to give up her time with her children and her new husband and her great family," said Terri Languell, Johnson's sister. That family includes three children - a 12-year-old son, 14-year-old daughter and 20-year-old stepson. It will be Johnson's first Christmas away from them. "We all are disappointed that we didn't get to be with her, we didn't get to see her. I'm so proud of her. I am. It's something so deep to know that somebody can do that," said Languell. A yellow ribbon will remain tied around the tree in front of the home of Johnson's parents until she returns. Johnson says her fellow soldier was able to get home in time to see his daughter before she went into surgery. She says there were some complications but the girl pulled through, is now home and is expected to make a full recovery. Sergeant Cathi Johnson is with an Army National Guard unit based in Bedford. --? The ONE and ONLY lefthanded-pathetic-paranoid-psychotic-sarcastic-wiseass-ditzy former-blonde in Bloomington!
