Default Dog Rescued From Debris Days After Tornado

http://www.local6.com/news/10934974/detail.html

Deland, Fla. -- A dog is OK after being pulled from the debris of a historic
Volusia County home two days after the house was destroyed by a tornado,
according to search-and-rescue officials.

A team of law enforcement officials from the Holly Hill Police Department,
Seminole County Sheriff's Office and Volusia County Sheriff's Office were
investigating The Alexander House, a historic home that is more than 100
years old, on West Howry Avenue in DeLand, on Sunday when neighbors told
them that everyone got out safely except the family dog.

While surveying the two-day-old damage of the two-story house, rescuers said
they heard a faint "arf" coming from the debris.

The team said they created a 4-foot crawl space by bending beams, pulling
back pieces of tin roof and removing exposed, jagged nails. One of the
rescuers entered the debris and found Fred, a Jack Russell terrier, in a
crumpled kennel.

"We weren't leaving until the dog came out," Seminole County Sheriff's
Deputy Mike Cannaday said. "Neighbors said (Fred) was a timid and quiet dog,
but the closer we got to him, the more he would whimper. The kennel had
nearly collapsed all around him, but luckily he was isolated in a pocket and
unharmed."

Fred is safe and sound and being cared for by neighbors, according to
officials.

On Sept. 7, 1995, The Alexander Haynes House was added to the U.S. National
Register of Historic Places.
