Default Help with pilling a cat

Sasha has CRF and is doing well on fluids. Dr prescribed a medication
for her appetite this week because she is dropping weight because she
is not eating enough. My problem is if she puts up a fuss and I don't
get the pill down the first time, she start salivating like crazy and
lapping her tongue. i feel so bad seeing her like this and here I am
trying to force her to swallow. I open her jaw with one hand and the
other I hold the pill with 2 fingers and 1 finger i use to drop her
tongue a little so the pill goes to the back of her throat. Any advice
on how we can do this without her slopping at the mouth is
appreciated.

Try a pet piller available at Petmeds for $2.99. Try grinding up the
pill and mixing with food. Try pill pockets, $8.99 at Petsmart.

Yes, I would try crushing it and putting it in some canned food. The vet
also can sell you a pill popper which is very good (long and very thin).

Definitely stop sticking yuor finger in her mouth, you're gagging her before
the pill even gets there.

Any advice

I have to pill my cat twice a day. We went through hell until I started
putting her canned food down and as soon as she has had a few mouthfuls,
gently taking her head and pointing her nose at the ceiling while opening
her mouth. I then TOSS the pill at the back of her throat, close her mouth
and pet her and lightly rub her throat. After just a few tries she stopped
fighting and now just swallows the pill every time because she wants to get
back at the food. Try it.

Pill pockets work great, but if you're cat is not a treat eater it
might be difficult to get her to eat them. Make sure you keep the
package tightly sealed or they will dry out quickly.

The reason why she is getting the pill is because she is not
interested in eating very much so anything with treats or food will
not help. Its supposed to increase her appetite. I am gonna call vet
today because its not working out. Ever since I started her on it on
Saturday, she's been depressed and lathargic and she is eating even
less than she was. Before she started taking this, you wouldn't even
know she was sick except for her not eating as much as she usually
does. i don't know if the pill is making her not feel too good or the
trauma of her momma putting something she doesn't want at the back of
her throat and closing her mouth shut until she swallows. Its not
coated either so if I think she swallowed and she tricks me and she
spits it back out, its all melted so I am sure it tastes terrible for
her. Maybe there's a liquid.

Oh, man, that never occurred to me. Sorry. I wonder if he could give
you a liquid that you could squirt down her throat with a syringe/turkey
baster?

Yeah, maybe so. But, really, the pill will not do that if you toss it far
enough to the very middle of the back of her throat and she will not
taste it either. She will not eat even her favorite treats? That is
dangerous,
cats get into trouble fast when they stop eating. Keep us posted, sorry
my advice did not help.

We add to that by puffing a smidge of air directly into her nose. It seems
to make them swallow.

I have a kitten named Sassy, which should tell you something about how
she handles taking medicine of any kind (pill or liquid). It is
virtually impossible to get a pill down her throat, even the vet tried.
I don't know if it would work with the medicine you are using or not,
but with the allergy medicine she needed we had a compound pharmacy
make it into a salve that we could give her transdermally (the
prescribed amount was wiped on the inside of her ear). I don't think
it is as effective as the pill format, but we did see some improvement
with her condition.

Default Help with pilling a cat

Now that you have received some good advice on pilling your kitty,
maybe a little humor might be in order.

Forget where I found this; might have been my step-daughter.

How To Give A Cat A Pill

Pick up the cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if
holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of
cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in
right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to
close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from under chair.

Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. Retrieve cat from bedroom
and throw soggy pill away. Take a new pill from foil wrap. Cradle cat
in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open
and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut
for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between the knees. Holding front
and rear paws, ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold
cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth.
Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail; get another pill from foil wrap. Make
a note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep
shattered figurines from hearth and set aside for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with its head
just visible from beneath spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking
straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down straw.

Check label to make sure that pill is not harmful to humans. Drink
glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm
and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. Retrieve cat
from neighbor's shed. Get another pill.

Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing.
Force mouth open with spoon, flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Put cupboard door back on the hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and
check records for last tetanus shot. Call the fire department to
retrieve cat from tree across the road.

Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly
to leg of dining room table. Find heavy-duty pruning gloves from
garage. Force cat's mouth open with small trowel. Push pill into
mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically
and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.

Get spouse to drive you to emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor
stitches finger and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye.
Stop by furniture store on the way home to order a new table. Arrange
for vet to make house call.
