Default Any suggestions? cone

Has anybody had to deal with a cone on a cat? I'm about to lose my mind.
Nanki-Poo has a nasty sore on the back of his neck, as well as some places
on the front where he scratched the area where he lost his hair because of
the radiation treatments.

Aside from the fact that the doctor is suspicious that the sore might be a
recurrence of his cancer (She did a biopsy today), the biggest problem is
that he scratches both the back and front of his neck. The put on a little
sleeve thing (like part of a sock with no toe) that goes over his neck, and
then a cone. By the time I got him home from the vet's (about a 5-minute
drive), he had both off. I put back on, but he's already got the sleeve out
from under the cone, and is doing his best to get the cone off again. Has
anybody dealt with anything like this, and if so, do you have any
suggestions?

I went prepared to hear the doctor say it was probably a flea allergy, as
she did the other two times he had the problem. However, this time she said
it might be a recurrence of the cancer. She did a biopsy, and a blood test.
She also though one kidney didn't feel right. His bladder was empty, so she
wants me to bring him in tomorrow morning so she can get a urine sample.

One of the reasons she did the blood test is that his gums are pale, and she
thinks he might be anemic. She gave him an antibiotic shot, and gave me
some pills to give him twice a day. Cortisone helped before, but she
doesn't want to give him that until she talks to the oncologist.

I'm supposed to keep him inside until the sore is healed. Since both my
cats are used to being able to go out whenever they want, and Lindy misses
the litter box half the time, that won't be easy.

Because he got the cone off so quickly, I called the vet and asked for
suggestions. She said that when I'm home so I can watch him, I should take
the things off. The main thing is to keep him from scratching his neck.
She did suggest that I go to a pet store and get some booties.

I think she is wrong about the cancer. If last July had been the
only time, it might be possible. However, the first time was almost three
years ago, so it seems unlikely. I'm going to go on believing that unless
or until the biopsy shows different.

I went to a pet supply store and they said the only booties they had match
sweaters they sell in the winter, and they'd all been put away. The woman I
spoke to suggested children's socks with tape. I bought some of the tape,
but couldn't find socks at Vons. I'll probably go some other places
tomorrow to try to get some, but I don't think he'll keep them on.

I took the cone off for tonight. I'll probably put it on him before I go to
the Toastmasters meeting tomorrow night. He didn't get it off this time. I
guess it was easier in the carrier. I took it off when I got back from the
store; then I fed him. After that, he disappeared. I finally found him a
while ago, and he had obviously been scratching it. I put on the soft
collar thing, but not the cone. So far he's left that alone.

The vet put in a call to the oncologist while I was still there, and had to
leave a message. She also put a rush on the biopsy. I'm hoping there will
be some answers within the next couple of days. I had thought that the
stress might be over for a while. After she said that about the cancer, I
started feeling sicker and sicker. For a few minutes I was afraid I might
barf right there in the vet's office. That finally passed, but I can feel
the tension. Even if the biopsy is negative, keeping them in the house (and
mopping up Lindy's Pee) will be a real pain.

Oh well. I just hope he'll forgive me. He hasn't run from me when I've
found him and petted him, but he hasn't purred or come to me either. He's
also very good at finding places where I can't find him.

I can understand why he isn't purring. That cone and the needing to
scratch. He knows you are helping him. Purrs for you until you get the
results. Sometimes, HOPE is all we have.

Thank you, Kyla. I've left the cone off today, and he's much happier. I've
caught him scratching a couple of times, but when I say, "No!" he stops.
