They don't to any great extent, unless they're developing something
like Alzheimers:

I read both, but didn't think either was entirely convincing. One is
the preliminary findings of
a US study -- That *suggests* that losing one's sense of smell in old
age could be a predictor of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) *which is
often* a precursor of Alzheimer's disease.

Second was, well, Wikipedia.

There are tons of articles on the subject, I found. Pick your google
link, I suppose--if you look long enough you'll find one to say what
you want it to. But yes, many of them say
that the cause of the loss is just...aging.

_______
Consultant - he say no, not aging in my case ;-)
That can be a gradual thing, not sudden.

Well, I saw a very nice consultant yesterday, a nose specialist. He took a
good history, felt all around my neck & glands for lumps, and put a scope
with a light on way up both nostrils - which was very unpleasant to say the
least.

I have to have a CAT scan & an MRI scan, one on my sinuses, one on my head.
He very carefully didn't say *brain*, bless him.
I now have to wait for different appointments for each and he says he will
send for me when he's seen them "to see what's to be done."
He was really nice and insisted I held my hand out so he could touch the
scope on it to prove it wasn't hot. I said "I would have believed you if
you'd just said so.."
I nearly said I knew about the brain tumour risk with smell/taste loss, but
decided not to so I will have my scan done on my head and not my brain ;-)

Maybe you are evolving into a higher life form? Did you get new senses to
compensate, like maybe a spider sense or impeccable tap dancing ability

Hope it turns out to be minor.

I like the idea, Mark, but I fear it may not be so. I could not tap dance
atm if you paid me loadsa money.

Lots of purrs on the way. It can't be any fun not tasting food or smelling
lovely flowers.

Takes all the pleasure out of eating. I want to take June out for a really
good meal for looking after things but we aren't going to do it until I can
taste it.
I was gutted not be able to taste Stilton. I love it, and treated myself to
some for Christmas. Zilch. I could only taste it was salty.

Purrs that its just a stinking cold and nothing more sinister.

It's more than that as I haven't had a cold for 5 months but that was when
it started.
I'm expecting to get some sort of sinus diagnosis eventually, rather than
anything worse, but I do appreciate my doctor sending me for investigations.
Each surgery has a budget for each patient they have and it costs them to
send a patient to a consultant, or for an operation.
I never used to cost them anything but now they probably hate me ;-) I
dread to think what I've cost them in the last 10 years. 2 different
fractures in 2011 with screws, plates, associated hospital stays, physio and
stuff will not be cheap.
I try not to feel guilty. I've worked all my life, paid in to the NHS
plenty and that's what it's for.

Mega purrs and prayers being sent.

Good Luck. I'll be thinking about you tomorrow.

Thanks, Judith. It really helps to know that, as I firmly believe that
purrs and prayers often work.

I had that happen to me many years ago. My sense of smell and taste were
gone for nearly a year. One good thing happened though as a result: I

was able to enjoy a trip to the zoo and not notice the offensive odors.

Thanks, Joy. It's actually risky for someone who lives alone. I couldn't
tell if any food was spoilt or if I had a gas leak for example.

Tweed

Yes, I can see that it would be. Also, of course, it would spoil one's
enjoyment of food.

Not quite the same but.....about 5 years ago I had one of those very
nasty cold type thingies and afterwards a lot of fried food smelt well
not bad but not at all pleasant anything apart from an omelette I
recall....even stranger (cat slaves are used to this sort of thing)
the few times I did say 24 hours afterwards when I pooped it smelt
the same..this lasted about 4 or so years

I've looked all that up, Jack, while I was waiting for my appointment, but
thanks, anyway.

Consultant says I don't have early Alzheimers phew
