(LOL!). It's a room/space/hut built either partly into the ground or at
ground level, and then covered with earth. Such a cellar is used for cool storage of food, and has been used for ages. That reminds me of the cellars people had when I was a kid. We called them dirt cellars. The door was usually more slanted, but the walls were just earth with beam supports. They were kind of creepy but necessary for tornado shelter as well as food storage. Brrrrr! If it were my cellar, Jake would have been evicted by now. :-)
Gotta agree with you, Seanette. I posted about Jake back earlier in the summer. I made several suggestions to DH as to how to "relocate" him. (her?). The suggestions all kinda died for lack of a second. Sherry |

I'm sure a grammarian could explain this more articulately! Joyce I usually think of "he/she is in hospital" as the same as "he/she has been hospitalized". When "the hospital" is used, the response is, "which one?" As for the cellar/shore usage, I never lived near a shore; but I have had a basement as an adult, as well as a cellar. And as an adult I have always used correct (by the book) grammar referring to them. There was simply no childhood colloquialism to grow up with. BTW, what is wrong with ending a sentence with a preposition? It sounds more natural! grin -- CATherine Who was it who said, "Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which we must put!"? Hugs, CatNipped |
