I have been looking forward to pulling that lever for . . . never mind
how long. But I am trapped !!!! Trapped in the house by the gas
company!!!!!!!! DAMN THEM!!!!
My meter reading is supposed to be today. I TRIED to get the
appointment changed-- BUT NO!!!!!! It had to be today--ELECTION
DAY!!!!!!!! SO I have to WAIT here to let in the meter reader, or get
a penalty on my gas bill. And it is PAST NOON, and the DAMN meter
reader is not here yet!!!!!!!!!

THE GAS COMPANY DOES NOT WANT ME TO VOTE!!!

Your gas meter is *indoors*?????

It is normal over here for gas and electricity meters to be indoors.
But they do not tell us when they are coming to read the meters. If you
are not in they leave a card and do an estimate - and you can do oyur
own reading if you prefer. I *think* that if they fail to get in a
certain number of times consecutively they do something more.

Alternatively I could read my own meters and submit the results by
email. I would but with my eyesight and the meters being at the backs
of cupboards it would be too difficult.

Yes.

Wow!

Although I'm quite sure all our meter readings are done remotely via
computer these days, every single one of our meters (gas, water &
electricity) is outside, and in the front part of the yard so that a meter
reader can check it without impinging on your private areas (you grant
them
access and the right to be on your property as part of the contract of
them
supplying the utility to you, but they are no more trespassing as anyone
else knocking on your front door without explicit permission from you
first).

I settled the question with a furious call to the gas company.
Without going into tedious detail, I convinced them to remove the
penalties on the bill, and I went off to vote.

News here in England is that Bush has got in again. If he had a brain, he'd
be dangerous.
How do you USA catters like that he's managed it again, or who might you
have wanted instead in your ideal world?

I've had sight problems like that too. Eyes don't swap quick enough from
light to dark, and looking into a cupboard, well.. you know what it's like.
Never mind about meters - mine are inside too - I was more bothered that I
couldn't see into my food cupboard.
I was bemoaning this to a friend in the USA and he sent me this marvellous
thing, a tiny LCD lamp that fits on to your forehead with a sort of elastic
band at the back to keep it on your head. It's fantastic. It runs for ages
on an AAA battery. 120 hours, IIRC.
No tin of baked beans escapes me now, I can see right into the back of my
cupboards with it, and can also shut up my chickens and see the path I'm
walking on to get there and back.
It's brilliant. He bought it on Amazon. You might like to see if it might
help you if it's still there. It's a tiny lamp 2 and a half inches x 1 and
half inches.
I wouldn't be without it.

Hope this helps

He's dangerous anyway. It scares me to death, especially since he has
Congress and will soon pack the Supreme Court. I don't like Kerry, but
I voted for him because I felt he was less dangerous.
