Vet Tech Journals: Oh joys of a Kitten Rescue Client....
I went into work on Thursday and there were FIVE bitties on the
schedule to be spayed or neutered. It was slow (for me) so I got a chance to pet and cuddle every one of them. And I hated every minute of it (sarcasm emphasis) First there was the black male. He immediately started mewing when I opened the cage and proceeded to purr and make biscuits as I scratched his back. Then he collapsed onto his side with an "Ohhhhhh yeaaaaa..." look. He didn't like it when I stopped and shut the door. Next to him was an orange and white tabby female with a funky right eye. The vet surmised she had an eye ulcer that healed funny. Didn't stop her. She opened her mouth to mew and a tiny sound came out. She also started kneading and purring up a storm when i scritched her. The next female was gray and white and while she purred she seemed to care less about my presence. She had a "I'm not sure who you are and why I am here but you are petting me so I guess that's ok..." Then there was the bitty that looked like she could be Mischief's sister. Light Gray with streaks of light brown, the little tortie mewed and rolled around and insisted that I scratch every INCH of fur on her belly. While I was petting her a white paw reached out from the cage next door and tapped my arm. So I went to that cage and opened it, and was shocked as a white ktiten literally jumped up and put her front paws on my chest and shoved her chin under mine and proceeded to give me violent headbutts. Wow....and when that didn't work she jumped onto my shoulder and stuck her furry nose in my ear and started purring. I was kinda surprised but still was petting her. She loved every second of it, and proceeded to headbutt my ear. then she nipped my ear. OW!!!!! I detached her from my shoulder and put her back into the cage where she slipped out of my grip and jumped back onto my shoulder. "This is MY perch now..." I detached her again, and managed to get her back into the cage, but as I shut the door she kept reaching through the bars, "HEY I'm not DONE with you YET!!" man, while the others were quite cute, whoever was going to be the slave of THIS bitty was in BIG trouble. They went home on Friday morning and I got to hug them all before they left. There was talk among my co-workers and I think some of them are thinking about adopting a few. *sigh* Then in my last hour of work, a vet comes back with a big box. In it are four, 5 week old bitties. Awwwwww....Three black, one gray and they all had eye infections and from the condition of their fur they were filthy. The vet said, "They were behind an industrial building, and it feels like they have some type of petroleum based product on their fur. Do you think you can give them all baths?" I grinned and said, "Geez, Doc, that's about the worst job you could give me." Soooo......got out the shampoo, flea combs, and large comb, towels, hair dryer and medicated eye ointment. Also grabbed the cotton swabs and some rubber gloves. took out the first black bitty, who squealed in protest. She didn't like me putting BNP ointment in her eyes and certainly didn't like being hosed down with water. then I soaped her up really good and brown water just dripped off. "Mew!!!" 'it's ok, bitty, just hold still..." "Mew!" "Well, you're filthy!" "MEW!" "It's the doctor's orders and you don't have a mommy kitty to clean you!" "Mew?" "it will be over in a minute" "Mew!" Had to grab the dish soap too to scrub her down. When the water finally ran clear, along with some drowning fleas. I wrapped her in a towel and started rubbing lightly. The box had slits cut into the sides and I could see the other bitties watching with WIDE, infected eyes. Ears and eyes got wiped out gently with cotton and then it was time for the hair dryer. The poor thing was shaking, she was so scared. But after a few minutes of warm air and combing I had a mostly dry ball of fluff. I relocated her to a cage that had a heating pad and a big bowl of kitten gooshy food. I repeated this with the other three kittens, each of them protesting every second. They all shook with fear, but I'm sure once I got all the dirt and fleas off of them they felt much better. The gray kitten, after two shampooings turned out to be a cream color with dark feet and ears. By the time I put the last clean bitty into the cage, the others were either curling up to sleep or rolling on their backs or trying to bite another's ear, etc. I tickled their tummies and cuddled all of them. The lady that found them was a delivery driver, so we gave her the names of a few rescue groups. the temptation was there, but i cannot take any more. But it was really fun to be presented with four, filthy bitties and turn them into happy, clean balls of fluff. I ended up missing my appt with the physical therapist. it was totally worth it though.
