GREAT FALLS, Va. -- A dog that was dragged behind a car is recovering in
Virginia.
The Jack Russell terrier is in the care of the Fairfax County Animal
Shelter. Since word of the animal's ordeal first became public, the

shelter
has been flooded with calls from people wanting to adopt the dog.
However, shelter officials can't release the dog until they find its

owner.

Police continue to search for the woman who tied the dog to a car, dragged
it along the pavement, then abandoned it by the side of a road.
The incident happened around 9 a.m. Saturday. Someone reported seeing a
woman drag a dog behind her car by its leash. The witness said the dog was
dragged for over 500 feet.
County officials said when the dog couldn't keep pace with the car, it's
back legs dropped out, and they were badly scraped.
According to police, the woman eventually stopped the car, got out, left

the
dog on the side of the road, then drove off.
The dog, a male Jack Russell terrier with a red nylon collar, suffered
severe injuries to all four paws and its hind legs. He was treated by a
veterinarian and has since been released to Fairfax Animal Control.
The woman was described as white, in her 20s, with shoulder-length brown
hair. The car was only described as a red compact car.
Anyone with information is asked to call Animal Control at (703) 266-6490.
Shelter officials say if it turns out the driver was the dog's owner, the
Jack Russell may be put up for adoption.
