Mr Oven Glove

Why?

Well, now the weather is turning colder, I've taken to lighting a coal/wood
fire in the hearth. It's quite lovely of an evening. Vernon & sit there,
have a glass of wine.. watch a film... talk... the cats curl up nearby.

So I'm sat there, in front of a roaring fire, sipping a glass of some nicely
chilled fermented juice of grape. Francis wanders in the room, sees the
fire, walks over me to get to the front of the hearth. He is standing about
a foot from the fire, soaking up the heat, eyes closed in bliss. Then I
notice smoke. The smoke is not coming from the fire. The smoke is coming
from Francis. The side of him facing the fire has smoldering fur. I move
Francis out of the way. I get the feline look of death. Francis tries to get
back to where he was sitting in front of the fire. Obviously he is not
content with a mere smolder... Talk about a cat that likes heat on a cold
late autumn evening! He is not best pleased that I have removed him...

He normally is. He's certainly far brighter than Marble (who has one brain
cell and it is devoted to food) but not as bright as Waffles. Francis is the
one who when outside and he wants to be in, will perch himself on the top of
my car, which is located at the front of the house, in perfect line of sight
of me sat at computer in the office... and he makes sure I know where he is
and that he's like the door opened please. But he seems to be hypnotised by
the open fire and the heat from it.

We used to really have to watch our guys, and ourselves when we had a
wood fire. We have a raised hearth, so it was easy to sit very close
and toast you coat (or fur) before the rest of you registered warm.

We had a gas log installed two years ago when it got to be too much
cost and work to care for a wood fire as often as we would enjoy one.

Still expensive, but I think of it more as entertainment than heat.
Since we live right by natural gas fields the cost isn't as bad as it
would be somewhere else.

Cats............ not the musical

We've had the furnace running lately, and I have seen a couple of the
cats not just laying near the air-vents, but actually curled in bliss ON
the air vent, getting nicely baked while napping.

Persia loved sitting in front of the log fireplace back home. She didn't
set her fur on fire, though My mother has gas logs but she's never
turned them on in 22 years. I'm terrified to even think about it! Persia
will just have to be satisfied with the sunshine. It's still warm here.

Poor Francis. He's such a character. Chasing chickens and immolating
himself.

Ah yes....Worshipping the Heat God. All our cats do that. It's a
wonder any heat ever gets into the room...
