Default AGGGH! #2: Sick L'il Kitty (upper respiratory infection)

Okay, the second one is that the poor guy (his name's Charlie) has an
upper respiratory infection. He was sneezing last night yet energetic,
so we thought it might just be him getting some anesthetic out of his
system. But when I came in today, he was sneezing, had discharge from
his eyes, kept having occasional snot (cutely enough, it'd come out as a
bubble, pop, and he'd bat his own nose, annoyed at the sensation), and
seems lethargic. He also does not seem to be eating much.

The Anti-Cruelty Society vet has recommended I just make sure he keeps
eating and drinking. He said that although Charlie's normal diet is dry
food, getting him some Fancy Feast or meat-based baby food might be more
tastier for him to eat and thus get him to eat (Charlie's sort of just
leaving the dry food). I'm not quite certain if he's eating or not ...
he appears to be nosing the water and the food, but I'm not quite sure
if he's lapping the water or dry food kernels or not. I've been told
that if he shows no interest in the Fancy Feast or baby food, then I may
need to take him in. He said the other thing I have to look out for is
dark green discharge from his nose. Other than that, it's sort of a
waiting game -- I guess these things last about 2-3 weeks for a cat.

Your experiences going through your cat's upper respiratory infection
would be appreciated. A long time ago, I came home as a teenager to
find that one of our family cats had died of feline immunodeficiency
virus (FIV) that she had been evidently born with. It broke my heart to
pick up her from where she died and put her in a box. And so this
little guy, who coincidentally seems to have some of her coloring, being
sick makes me VERY nervous, especially since I'm gone 10 hours every day
(8:00 am to 6:00 pm) for work. Good stories would be appreciated!

My thanks in advance to everybody who answers ... this new cat-daddy is
finding himself a l'il overwhelmed at times ...

Sounds like a trip to the vet for antibiotics might be in order.

Back in July I trapped a cute tiny orange tabby kitten who was living
under the bushes at the office
(http://www.webfolks.us/dan/photos/sammy.html). When I trapped him he
had a little bit of discharge from his eyes and just the slightest bit
of a runny nose. First thing I did once I trapped him was run him to the
vet for a checkup - I had 3 other cats at home and didn't want to bring
a possibly infectious kitten into their midst.

The vet kept the kitten for 3 days (at my request). He got antibiotic
treatment the whole time he was there, and I was given two more weeks of
oral meds to administer. Turns out that he was REALLY sick - it was a
good thing I'd trapped him when I did.

If finances prove to be an issue, a lot of vets will accept postdated
checques or will work with you to make payment arrangements.

I don't mean to offend those who truly don't know any better (at the
same time, if you DON'T know any better, maybe you should Google the
RPCC charter), and if you are offended, I do apologize, but I honestly
do not know which is worse anymore, flamers or misplaced posts. Like I
said, enough is enough, and it's time to take a stand against it.
Maybe a moderated group is finally in order.

--- (Unca) Cory

Googlig for the charter won't make any difference. Here's what I found
when I did:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CHARTER: rec.pets.cats.community

This unmoderated group is for the free exchange of ideas and experience
about cats and among cat-lovers, whether from a human or imagined feline
perspective.

This is a freeflowing, sometimes whimsical group welcoming both
light-hearted and serious cat-related topics, and the use of any writing
style.

There are no restrictions as to form.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I didn't realize that posts of this nature were considered
off-topic. Yes, I was aware that the *primary* purpose for RPCC was as a
forum for meow-chat, but didn't know that meow-chat was *the* purpose.

Please don't misunderstand me - I don't have a problem with this!
Cleopatra, Amelia, Tabitha, and Sammy will most likely be around for a
good while yet. But I would recommend that someone post a pointer to
http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/meow_faq.htm or some similar document
from time to time

I hadn't realized that this forum was focused on 'meowchat.' I agree
with you that having named it rec.pets.cats.meowchat would have made
this clearer.

I usually try to use Google Groups to discover where issues are being
talked about, and it suggested r.p.c.c. It seems to be an outgrowth of
the old Deja News 'interest finder' function.

In any case, I'll move these discussions over to the appropriate forums.
I apologize for any offense I've given to anyone.

I would recommend, Cory, that you be a little kinder with people who
don't know any better and have no evil or harm intended in their hearts
towards you.

My sincere thanks to everyone who has been so kind with answering my
questions, especially now that I learn that they were off-topic in this
environment.

Cory, are posts about pro sports on-topic or off-topic?

I was not offended as most of them are coming from a new kittydaddy who
genuinely wants to make his kitten's life as good as he can, I think that
the occasional post of this nature is good for all of us as there is so very
much great experience here. If Jean doesn't know about it somebody does and
helping our cats or their hoomans is after all what life is about to me,
sorry these are upsetting you and hope you feel better soon, soft

I don't want to start a possible international incident here, but am I
the only one who is a little irked by all of the Off Topic posts?? I
was around before and after the split fracas so many years ago, but not
during. Having said that, I DO happen to have some experience with
people becoming annoyed with Meowchat in RPC before the split.
Meowchatters were CONSTANTLY picked on by people who thought it was
stupid, annoying, childish, or any other idiotic verb you can think of
(such as idiotic). It's one of the reasons the split happened in the
first place. Now that we have the split, everything *should* be
hunky-dory, but IMNSHO, it ain't. One of the reasons RPCC was created
in the first place was so that the kitties (and lurking Uncas and Antis
who are fluent in their own "brand" of meowchat) could have A PLACE OF
THEIR OWN. If others got their noses out of joint because of the
meowchatters, doesn't it follow that the meowchatters would get their
noses out of joint by people constantly coming in here when their
issues would be better off being discussed in, oh, I don't know,
REC.PETS.CATS.HEALTH+BEHAV, or REC.PETS.CATS.MISC???

I've personally had enough of this, and I won't put up with it anymore.
This is NOT a "community" newsgroup in the sense that it should be for
EVERY subject cats that's out there. AAMOF, had I been around
during the split talks, I would have VERY, VERY, VERY STRONGLY urged
whomever was in charge of creating the RPC subgroups NOT to name this
particular group rec.pets.cats.community, and these off-topic posts
would have been my reasoning why. I would have, instead, urged people
to name this newsgroup what it is... rec.pets.cats.meowchat. People
may have been worried about flamers and whatnot, had the group been
named what it should have been, and part of me can understand that, but
IMHO, people should have the guts to flame a narrow-minded pencil neck
geek who flames us in the first place for a dialect that we KNOW is
fantasy, and we KNOW is not a "real" dialect. Get some gumption.
Barring that, there would have always been the header info. that could
have been directed to SOME abuse outlet, should some lame-ass flamer
come in here. Instead, we don't have a flamewar problem, but we DO
have an issue of posts not being posted in the proper place they should
be posted.

I don't mean to offend those who truly don't know any better (at the
