Almost half the posts in rec.pets.cats.anecdotes are spam written by people
with no interest in cats. But that's what happens in an unmoderated group -
the idiots take over.

That's what killfiles were designed for. You don't have to see that
crap. Filter it out. If I see spam or trolls, they go right into the
bozo bin. It's quick, easy and painless.

Use a newsreader with killfile/filtering capability. Learn how to use
it. You don't have to see that stuff. I sure don't.

Moderated? No thanks. IMHO with moderated groups, the moderator
usually turns out to be a petty tyrant. I'll decide for myself which
posts to k/f and which posts/posters to read/reply to, thanks. It's
really very simple.

Sure she does. She regularly killfiles her toy mousies and the catnip
socks.

I wonder if robert is a troll with the last name CATT??

I've seen the name before but not in long while. Suddenly pops up again
talking about all the spam. What?

Bob Catt is NOT a troll, Jill. Bob Catt is an ailurophile!

Gee, thanks for the definition. I'm not the one who called you a troll,
Bob. I just don't understand the sudden tizzy about spam (or trolls).
I very rarely see the sort of posts you're talking about. I filter that
sort of garbage out.

I still prefer my newsgroups unmoderated. It's easy enough to skip over
the morons (kill-filing only works when they don't keep changing names
on you) and I don't want someone else deciding what I should and should
not read.

Hear hear!

Nymshifting is easy enough to deal with. It's easy enough to recognize
spammers. Trolls frequently cross-post to very unrelated groups.
Killfile them all. It's pretty simple and virtually painless.

I don't even bother with that as I come on here at least once a day and I'm a fast reader so I just scan the headings and ignore the obvious trolls
