Default Oliver the Weather Weenie

Oliver cracks me up sometimes. He now listens to the weather radio. We
have one of those little weather alert radios that gives an alarm when
the National Weather Service announces bad weather. You can also use it
to listen to the official NOAA forecast. It goes off every Wednesday
between 11 am and 12 pm as a test. A few weeks back I noticed that it
had been turned off which was strange but just turned it back on and
didn't give it another thought. A few days after that I was getting out
of the shower when I heard a man's voice. I thought my husband had come
home early but it turned out that Oliver had climbed up on his crate
where the weather radio is located and had turned it on. He was sitting
there listening to it. It was so cute. I thought he must have
accidentally turned it on but did think it was strange that he was up on
his crate because he almost never gets up there. I let him listen and
figured after a few minutes I'd turn it off. No need to though, because
he reached over and turned it off all on his own! It was like--OK, I've
heard what I wanted to now I turn it off and leave. It was SO funny but
surly a fluke, I thought. Nope! He now gets up there and listens
regularly. He turns on the weather radio and listens for a while and
then turns it off and leaves. The really, really bizarre thing is that
he only does this when we're expecting "bad" weather. If we're going to
have sunny weather for a few days he doesn't listen. But if there is
rain or snow in the forecast he listens every morning. Now do I think
he understands what he hears? Not really but then again he does seem
pretty darn smart.

He really cracked us up the other day because he seemed bored during
the marine forecast (after all, he wasn't going boating that day!!)
yawning and grooming but perked up when he was listening to the local
forecast and then he turned it off. Steve almost fell off the bed, he
was laughing so hard.

The other weird thing is that my husband actually works for NOAA and is
a meteorologist (but in research, not national weather service) so he
thinks it is only natural that HIS boy is interested in the weather.

Doo-doo-doo-doo Doo-doo-doo-doo (Twilight Zone theme).

Amazing! What a smart kitty! Maybe he just likes the local forecaster's
voice. It would still be pretty smart of him to figure out that once his
favorite announcer is gone, it's time to turn off the radio.

Is he a Maine Coon? We think Felix is part MC, and he's definitely on
the high end of the feline bell curve [and we've both had a lot of
cats to compare him to].

I don't think he is part MC. You can see a picture of him at
http://www.mindspring.com/~sfinepix1/Oliver/
but I think DSH about sums it up.

I know I am his Meowmie but he just seems sharper and seems to have a
bigger personality compared to some of my friend's cats. I'd just chalk
the radio thing up to stepping on the button but he always turns the
radio off after he sits near it and seems to listen to it...

Well, Bruiser couldn't get any papers, but he looks Mainly Coon and...
let's just say he's big, cuddly and has a good personality.

What a little cutie! I love that white stripe down his nose.

Too bad you can't get pictures or video of this. :-)

pssst, Margaret. Jazz told me to tell you that Oliver is really listening to
broadcasts from the Mothership and he's secretly sending it out to all the
kitties around the world. Don't tell anybody, it's a secret.
