I do my own rendition of this, also with sourdough--but I add a portobello mushroom and use that OTHER Italian sandwich cheese ... that escapes my harried brain at the moment ... grrr..! It is also white ... delis always have it ... aughghghghh! Help!! Provolone, perhaps? Victor, your recipe sounds delish. G I still have pleasant lingering memories of the meals I ate in Italy. (happy sigh) YES!! Thanks, Melissa. Speaking of Italy it was in Florence that I first had this portobello, cheese and tomato sandwich. At that time when most of the places are closed, when Americans are accustomed to having lunch and Italians have gone home to be with their families, only to return to work after a couple of hours and stay there until 7 or 8 p.m. And then it is out for gelato, of course. It must be time to go again .... I wish. You and me both. G I spent my two weeks in Italy at a watercolor painting workshop in Umbria. The place where I stayed was a converted monastery, and the cooks on the staff were frickin' FABULOUS. we ate really excellent Italian home cooking and some of THE best pasta I've ever had. Ah, Gelato. You HAD to say that fatal word! =o) I spent a few hours in Rome on that trip, but would love a chance to see Florence. Melissa |

Melissa Florence is very nice and I got a beautiful leather coat there. Seeing your posts brought back memory of my trip to Italy more than 10 years ago. We went all over Italy, from Sorento in the south to the Italian lakes near the Swiss border. Unfortunately we didn't get many good meals until we ate at a small island near Venice. I remember my gelato in Rome near Spanish steps readily melted in the heat during Siesta Maybe I should take a trip to little Italy in town. Winnie |

It must be time to go again .... I wish. Whines: I wanna go toooooo! Pam S. who may someday get to see Burope If you go, go in the spring and fly into Paris, to Orly airport, Spend at least a few days (a week is better) in Paris, (the left bank is the best, it is older and more medieval, though all the big grand stuff like the Eiffel Tower, the Tuileries, and the Louvre are on the right bank) then take a slow train to Florence Italy that goes along the coast of France near Nice. (The express is NOT what you want. Put your foot down, if you don't speak French well, as the worst thing in the world about France is the guys who work at the train stations! They are just very intimidating. I speak a little French and can understand it and Italian very well from my Latin and Greek years.) The reason I say go in the spring and fly into Paris--because that way you get the whole treatment. It may be cheaper to go in the winter and fly into London, but I'm telling you, the price difference is not big enough to make it worth it. Late April to early May--in Paris--is heaven. I walked around crying part of the time just because every thing is so beautiful. Then you get to Florence and every thing (in my opinion) is even more beautiful. And believe it or not, there are safe, clean places where you can stay that cost $50 USD a night--both on the Left Bank in Paris and in Florence. It's not everyone's cup of tea--you have to be kind of a "culture vulture," to be wowed by old stuff and beautiful stuff, and to like museums and gardens. I had a rail pass so I could go anywhere on the train. I found markets and lived on the cheese and fruit and bread I bought there the first time I went. And--wildest of all, to many people--I went alone. It was wonderful, as I just did whatever I wanted and did not have to consult with anyone. (I was neither married nor in love at the time. Had I been, I would have gone with him.) Everything is just so different. You would love it. I hope you decide to go one day. It is expensive but you can do anything if you really want to. |

"Adrian" had some very interesting things to say
about Inconsistency: Seanette Blaylock wrote: Why is it just fine and dandy for Tweed to mercilessly abuse Jill, but not fine for her to get back a *fraction* of what she's dishing out? I'd hoped you were going to apologise for a post sent in haste. Obviously this is not the case, what a pity I thought you were better than that. I repeat, I will *consider* doing so when Tweed is willing to retract outright vicious commentary aimed at Jill. I refuse to apologize for calling her on her out-of-line behavior until she's willing to admit she went too far. -- "The universe is quite robust in design and appears to be doing just fine on its own, incompetent support staff notwithstanding. :-)" - the Dennis formerly known as (evil), MCFL |

You resorted to belittling her battle with cancer and how she's struggling to deal with it. That is taking things to a whole other level of meanspiritedness. Shame on you. If you want to call her on the Jill thing, keep it to that. No need to bring anything else into it. And besides, Jill seemed to be handling the thing just fine, I doubt she needs anyone stepping in to fight her battles for her. -- Britta "There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast." -- Unknown Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album |

Jill has been extremely gracious and understanding. Can't you do the same? Sherry |

Seanette, that's bloody well bull**** and you know it. There's not one
damned person here stopping you from sharing your pain with the group and it's inconceivable you would think this. We have always, always ALWAYS been welcome towards any member here that's in pain. You're putting your self perceived assumptions on the wrong person. You're not sharing because YOU don't want to. Tweed has zero to do with it. But I'll tell you what. This entire.... (and I'm backspacing out of alot of words here)... thread has made me wonder just how bloody damned welcome I've been this last year. Thank you. I don't give a rat's ass what was said to ANYBODY, you had zero right to call Tweed's posts "whimperings". You've said before, your emotions are thinner some days than others. What the hell do you think Tweed's running these days? Good cheer and happy thoughts? She may have made an unintentional harsh post. I don't know. I don't really care. I haven't looked that hard. But it's time some people take a step back and wonder if they're not being overly harsh. This just disgusts me, severely. Moreso than this group has ever in the past. |

*snorts*
Apparently not. Just as I get my feet back in the water, I hear another long standing member begrudge another member we may not have with us for as long as we like. As I said, it truly makes me wonder how welcome my grievings have been in this group. It hurts much much more than it would otherwise knowing how Tweed must feel and having someone call them whimperings. |

Oh, and all the nastiness about how subhuman someone is who doesn't abandon job and responsibilities to deal with a not-unusual wandering dog WASN'T mean-spirited? You and I must use different definitions of that word. Oh, and everyone, thanks for all the caring about my overwhelming problems in life that I can only allude to for fear of Tweed's treating me as badly as she did Jill (which was outright painful for me to read, TYVM). Makes me wonder how it is that someone who's posted repeatedly about hating cats for being (gasp) predators can be nearly worshipped while a life-long cat lover is nothing around here. -- "The universe is quite robust in design and appears to be doing just fine on its own, incompetent support staff notwithstanding. :-)" - the Dennis formerly known as (evil), MCFL |
