A Thank You to Sherry (OT)
And to others similiarly concerned.
I listed my mothers car on an online site and apparently have attracted the attention of someone who, shall I say, I'd rather not deal with. (And if he's reading here, hey! I told you NO!) He's 2000 miles away, which was the first red flag. The second red flag was he asked if I'd meet him at the airport with the car. Uh, NO. The third red flag was he mentioned he could drive me home from the airport. Uh, NO. That made absolutely no sense and I wasn't about to go for it. The fourth red flag (yes, they keep on coming) is he mentioned a wire transfer of funds. Does he think I'm nuts? I'm not about to give out my bank account information. The fifth red flag was when I said no I wouldn't accept his offer. He replied to the same advertisement hours later under a different email name, asking if it was still available. Then he called me to tell me he'd been contacted by this "second" guy to tell him the car is still for sale. Why would another party know he was interested in my car in the first place? And then email him about it?! That doesn't make a lick of sense. This guy must think I was born yesterday. I took the listing off the site. I'll just have to find another way to sell the friggin car. OB Cats: Persia is snoring away in a bright patch of sunshine. It's been raining here for the past few days so she's very happy to have a patch of sunshine to snooze in Jill |

Yesterday Molly was sprawled in her favorite spot on the back porch, waiting for the sun to come to her. Guess her internal clock was a bit off as the sun was still a few inches away. Jo |

Thank Bast he has no idea where I live and can't get on the island without permission. It's bad enough he has my phone number. This guy is nuts. Jill Call both the police and phone company if this continues. They can put a tracer on the line. That may not even be necessary with Caller ID, but it provides another level of evidence. At the very least, they can throw a real scare into this guy. If necessary, he can be charged with stalking. This is the reason I never sold my cars through private sale, even though I probably lost money by trading them in when I bought other cars. Of course, you did not have that option since you were not buying a car, but my sister sold hers through a used car dealer. Again, she probably lost money on the deal but she did not have to worry about anything like that. Take care! MaryL |

On several levels! I remember we used to place classified ads and sell things all the time, and never think twice about it, whether I was home alone or not. I had a couple of real wackjobs respond to a Freecycle post and now I don't even use Freecycle anymore. I just put things on the curb at my sons house in town instead. These people who responded to the Freecycle ad were just weird, kept hanging around, then when I thought they'd left, they were in the garage looking around. I'd left the door up. Sherry |

Just a thought. That guy is VERY creepy, and I would definitely call the cops. I also would start taping his calls, if possible. Mishi |

I might be wrong about this, but he doesn't sound dangerous in the sense of you needing to worry that he might physically hurt you. But he's definitely a scammer, and you were wise to cut him off. The fifth red flag was when I said no I wouldn't accept his offer. He replied to the same advertisement hours later under a different email name, asking if it was still available. Then he called me to tell me he'd been contacted by this "second" guy to tell him the car is still for sale. Wow - he's a scammer who won't give up. Maybe he's new at this? Seasoned con artists know when to give up because the "mark" isn't going to buy the bullsh*t. I took the listing off the site. I'll just have to find another way to sell the friggin car. It really sucks that you have to be inconvenienced because of creeps like this guy. -- Joyce ^..^ To email me, remove the XXX from my user name. PS - the thing about the wire transfer reminded me of a funny line from the famous House episode. This woman is trying to convince him that she has a life-threatening illness because the cat curled up next to her (which the cat does only with people who are about to die). She's standing in the doorway of his office during this conversation, while he's sitting at his computer. He says, "Go away, I'm busy. I'm online with the Prince of Nigeria." LOL. |

Sherry Isn't it a shame? That's creepy about the people poking around in your garage, Sherry. I do wish I could set things by the curb and watch them disappear. I call it "curbcycle" I did it all the time in TN, got rid of an old vacuum cleaner that way, stuff like that. I can't do that here on the island. I had thought of using Freecycle to get rid of some things such as an old microwave stand that none of us wants. Now I'll think twice, even though no one can get on the island without me telling Security it's okay. Thanks for the heads up! Back in 1984 I put an ad in the newspaper to sell my wedding dress. The only calls I got were from men! One guy pretended he wanted to buy the dress for his daughter. It sounded plausible enough, until he told me he couldn't wait to see her in it and then see her OUT of it! Oh gawd. Another guy asked me to describe the dress; he was was your basic heavy-breather type. Ugh! I couldn't believe the wackos who called. Neither could the woman I spoke with at the newspaper when I called to cancel the ad. Jill |

They benefit from the donations, and so do I since I itemize. I continue to donate in years when I don't itemize because the items still go for a good cause. That gets items into the hands of people who can really use them and avoids the problems of garage sales and "creepy" responses to ads. MaryL |
