I'm hoping that 5 new kittens is the final count.

Ooops... Just when Sammy looked settled in and finished, she started

with
new contractions. Baby number 6 came at 8:05am.

Wow! That's a big litter unless she's Siamese.

Plain ole mixed breed and small at that. Her pre-pregnancy weight was only
about 7 1/2 pounds. I was able to detect 3 for sure and possibly a 4th one
during her pregnancy but 6 was completely unexpected.

Aww, you're a good dad! Tell me, did she purr while giving birth? My

Gnarly
purred the whole time, my first clue that purring can indicate

emotions
that
are not entirely pleasurable.

Sammy purred quite a bit - even when I had to help extract placentas.
Definitely not the most pleasurable circumstances. Another thing very
noticable was the amount of kneading she did. I would rub her head and
behind her ears and she would lightly grasp my hand with a paw and curl

her
toes around my fingers.

Mamacat did that, too. I've read that cats purr whenever they feel
something profound; I'm guessing birth must be pretty profound for a
cat. :-)

Laura

I think purring may also act as a natural sort of tranquilizer for when in
pain.

She sounds like a total darling.

Sammy had 6 kittens total - 5 of them are pale orange tiger marked like

her. The 6th one is pure black except for a white diamond shaped badge on
his chest and a bit of white at the base of each ear.

What a huge responsibility. Do you think you may be able to find them homes
yourself, with friends, family, and acquaintances? I wish I had spayed and
neutered Gnarly's kittens before I let them go--if only because I know one
of the people I gave a kitten allowed her to have kittens. But at that time
that would have been an expensive proposition at my age for four kittens,
and six is even worse. Can't wait to see the photos! I wish I could take an
orange one. I want a little orange cat, and one that has Siamese markings.
Unfortunately, I have all I can handle now with two.

Buddha does it most loudly when she hears the pop top of the cat food can,
which for her, I KNOW is profound. My darling chowhound who cannot tell
time, so she shows up in the kitchen EVERY time I do, hoping is is meal
time.
