What's weird is that here in Southern California there are still some
places where you can buy fireworks legally from roadside stands (maybe
some of the unincorporated areas?). People from other communities buy
them, then take them home to set them off.

I wish on the 4th of July here the fireworks would be limited to public
displays set off by professionals.

They ARE, in much of the United States - although there are always some
people who manage to get hold of them illegally, and set them off.

Unfortunately, here in Sw OK they're sold legally. Every June and July
we get stands set up all over town, even though there are only a
couple places where they can legally be set off. And, every year it
seems there will be someone hurt or a fire.

It really burns me up that we can be in the midst of a drought with
fire alerts and burn bans, and yet the city still allows fireworks to
be sold - just so they can collect the sales tax.

Oklahoma. Fireworks are legal, except in larger municipalities. You can set
them off right in the city limits here, if you want to. (Despite the fact that
all we have is a rinky-dink all-volunteer fire department!!)

Steve Touchstone,

I agree. It's hot, dry, and usually windy on the 4th of July. It's insane to
have legal fireworks.

Can you still? I know there used to be areas where you could get them
legally (although setting them off elsewhere is illegal), but I thought
they had extended the laws forbidding them. (But I suspect you get
around more than I do - you seem to be an outdoor type, and a
motorcyclist, I'm just a staid old lady.)

Reminds me of when I lived in Sherman, Texas, just across the river
from Oklahoma. A friend of mine had bought a case of dynamite, then
called and asked me to remove some large stumps from his property. In
the spirit of cooperation with local authorities (also because the
stumps were in the city limits), I called the local fire chief and told
him what was going on. He informed me I would be required to take out a
$1m fireworks (!) bond plus pay for a fire truck and crew to be standing
by. I thanked him profusely and courteously and went out the next day
and went through the whole case of dynamite in about three hours. I
never heard from the fire chief or anyone else about it. I guess they
thought the fourth of July had started early.
For what it's worth, whenever the law makes it a point to complicate
the simple and make what should be cheap expensive, I always make it a
point to break that law and defy them to do anything about it. Haven't
been sent to jail, yet. :-)

i would like such a law here and if I ever become Prime minister I'll make
sure such a law is passed along with a ban on fox hunting.

And if I ever become Prez we'll form an alliance.
All animal abusers would be subjected to the abuse which they themselves
inflicted. Think how much money we'd save. Instead of spending all that money
on prison upkeep, all they'd need would be a dog house, a 6 foot log chain, a
100-degree climate, and an empty water and food bowl.
