Default Acne?

I'm a bit worried about Archer. He has what looks to be a tiny black
scab on his chin - only one. I would normally explain that as a nick by
another cat's claw, but it's been there for over two weeks now. I would
hate to bring up bad memories, but has anyone here had experience with
anything like this (of course my first thought jumps to cancer or
something equally as dire. We can get together the money for a vet if
we absolutely *have* to, at least within the next month or so. I'm, of
course, hoping that it's just something trivial as acne (they don't use
plastic dishes or bowls - they use Correlle ware.

It's probably acne. There are dozens of articles you can find besides
these, and home treatments. Bosley had
it and he never saw a plastic bowl in his life.

Beauty had chin acne, which went away as fast as it came. It's not
serious.

I wish I could remember more about it -- Bosley's began with just a
few blackheads. The
problem was, he gets extremely mean when he's being messed with, and
he's too big
and strong (and smart) for me to be consistent about any kind of home
treatment. He ended
up looking much like the photo in the first link, I am embarrassed to
say, and we did end
up going to the vet more than once. OTOH, one of Marina's cats (and I
can't remember
which one) had bouts with occasional blackheads, and would allow her
to clean them so
it never became a big deal. Sigh. Anything with Bosley always turns
out to be A Very
Big Deal.
I don't doubt that bacteria from plastic bowls does cause it, but that
just couldn't have
been the case here. Fortunately, he hasn't had it since.

Luckily both boys allow me to do anything I want with them. I sit them
upright on my lap to clip claws and they just look up at my face with
puzzled expressions as if to say, "I don't know *why* you're doing this
mommy, but since it's you doing it it must be OK."

I'll try giving it a good wash. Right now it's just the one little scab
so may I can forestall anything worse.

Thanks again, Sherry.

Shmogg had the occasional blackhead under the chin too. Never seemed to
bother him. TED at the time seemed unconcerned - he was of the opinion that
cats get zits like people do, and if it wasn't severe (it wasn't) and didn't
bother the cat (it didn't) then just let it be and it would clear up of its
own accord (it did). The vet said that the 'treatment' could be worse than
the 'cure', especially for mild 'occasional' cases, and doubly so with a cat
with the temperment of the Shmoggmeister.

I get the occasional zit, too, despite being well past the teenage years,
and I treat mine in exactly the same way as the vet treated Shmogg's. keep
an eye on things so they don't get worse, don't pick at it (easier said than
done for mine. Never picked at Shmogg's, he would have taken my arm off had
I tried), and in a few days the go away. I get them in the same place each
time, too, just like Shmogg.

YMMV

What color is Archer? I had several generations of white cats, and all
of them seemed to have occasional acne on their chins/lower lips.

He's oranj-stripey. Ben managed to get my good camera working (but it
needs a new battery before I can use it anywhere except at home... come
to think of if I guess it doesn't need a new battery ;), so I"ll try to
get a good close-up of it later this evening.
