my computer crashed
On Tuesday. It would not boot up, so I took it to a local computer shop.
It was either a virus or a hard disc failure. I said I have a good anti-virus program, but the computer engineer laughed. He said "well, you put your seat belt on when you are in your car but it doesn't stop you having an accident and getting killed" Good point. It looked a bit terminal, tbh, but luckily he got my computer up and running this afternoon. Phew. The registry was in his words "a bit knackered" and it is now sorted. He did warn me about running on XP. I know it and I need a new computer. |

Hackers are constantly finding ways to get through A/V software. It's very important to make sure you have installed the latest updates. It was no big deal since I wasn't constantly installing new software. The hardware in yours (not knowing how old it is) is probably due for an upgrade. Do you run backups? I have an external drive and back up the computer once a week. Jill |

Microsoft no longer support XP (since April) so they don't update it. Which means (so says the computer engineer) that very soon I won't be able to use Facebook, e-bay, etc. I know it's true because if I want to view anything on YouTube now, a pop box comes up saying "Your browser is out of date and you won't be able to see this site soon" not exactly those words but the message is clear. Do you run backups? I have an external drive and back up the computer once a week. No, I don't. I don't know how to. I'm going to find out how somehow. I nearly lost precious photos, all the email addresses of my friends...remind me to write them all down and not trust a computer to store them. Anyway I'm hoping to buy a new computer in the New Year. I have to have someone to come in to sort my trees out, and it will be megabucks.. The person who lived here before planted a lot of trees, not realising that 30 years later they are taking over. I stopped counting my trees at 40+ So for the moment, I have to spend money on trees. The ones that are leaning will be taken out. The fruit trees will be pruned in the hope they will become productive again. Most of the elder trees will be taken out, but not all, as I use their berries to make wine. It's supposed to be unlucky to kill an elder tree. I don't think I can be more unlucky than I have been without killing an elder before, so I'll risk it. Jill |

I nearly lost precious photos, all the email addresses of my friends...remind me to write them all down and not trust a computer to store them. ~~~~~~~~~~ It's really important to keep backup files. I have emphasized this to friends on many occasions, only to have some of them call me in a panic at a later date because their computer had crashed! I tend to go to the extreme in making multiple copies. I make a complete backup once a week. As a believer in Murphy's Law, I alternate disks so that I always have a "more recent" copy. I have "my life" on the computer, so I even keep one copy in my safety box as the bank as insurance if something were to happen to the house. I alternate that one every few months. Here's what I consider the easiest way to do it. Buy an external hard disk (preferably two). You could get one of the external disks that is always connected to your computer, or you could get one of the small portable disks. They are now small but will hold lots of data, and the price is much less than in the past. Instead of doing a true "backup," I like to simply copy all of my files to the backup disk. That way, you will not need to worry about a "backup and restore" program. You can just copy the files back onto your computer using the "copy and paste" method. As a matter of fact, you can do this same thing to copy your files from your current computer to a new computer. I hope this works for you. Do it ASAP to avoid the pain of a hard disk crash. MaryL |

MaryL ~~~~~~~~~~ One final point: I backup all files (data, photos, etc.), but I do not actually backup *programs.* There are backup programs that will do that, but I find it much important to make copies of my own files. I keep all the original program files so I could reinstall them, if necessary, but the irreplaceable information is in my own files. You mentioned photos, for example, and you might have personal and financial data on your computer. MaryL |
