Default Tongue hanging out

A friend has reported to me that his landlord's black cat - a large 15
year old that hates everyone but "daddy" - has his tongue chronically
hanging out of his mouth. Anyone know what could cause this?

Hi Dennis. My cat Smokey who recently passed away (july 9) had his eye
removed due to infection. He didn't do well there after. He started to
lose weight from not eating. Towards his last days his tongue would be
hanging out all the time. This could be a sign of dehydration. Smokey
lived to be 16 years old. Here is my webpage of all my cats:

If he means just the tip of the cat's tongue sticking out, then that's
common. Why they do it? Don't know. ;-)

I used to know a cat who was hit by a car. As a result, he lost an eye
and his tongue
hung out all the time, always out the front of his mouth. He was
black, so the little pink tongue was quite striking against his fur.
Ralph lived to be very very old, and was a happy boy nonetheless.

My "Bear" does it when he's stressed, like going to the vet in the
car, or when I have loud guests in the house.
