It's not tobacco, it's GREASY GRITTY all you can **** buffets and McDonalds...THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT KILL US. ... It has been over six years be 7 years in February I still have to stop myself when I am around other smokers from bumming a cig. Cat if you husband really wants to quit talk to your doctor about zyban my wife took it and it worked for her she had tried everything at least 3 x I am going to say this from a man's perspective one he is going outside and away from the house that means he feels guilty about doing it. or trying to be a sneak you are the best judge. There is no way to hid being a smoker you smell it no matter what you use to cover it NOT ALL MEN ARE ALIKE SOME ARE A@SHOLE ( like me) AND THERE ARE GREAT GUYS ( like me) OUT THERE PLEASE DON"T INCLUDE ALL OF US IN THE LYING PART. :-) The lying part is he making the lies obvious if so he wants to be caught. Catch him in the act coming around the corner with a garden hose and soaking his a@s to start would be awake up call. Did that to one of our kids who lied to us about them smoking after we had quit. If not being obvious confront him about it but be casual when you do it. If you attack full on all you will get is a fight denials and more lies; men either buck up, get real defensive, lie about it or admit the truth. Usually the first 2 Make sure you let him know that the lies are endangering the marriage and deeply emotionally cutting you Giving up smoking is one of the hardest challenges they are specially for a person who is over weight. Does he deserve some slack? Only you can answer that you live with him between what your family is going thru from your post I am surprised you haven't started back smoking. Keep strong and vent all you like We will listen "Adrian" wrote in message ... CatNipped wrote: snip Yeah, I won't let him get anywhere near me with a cigarette or even smelling of cigarettes. Hugs, CatNipped I know what you mean, it's 4 years and 2 weeks since I last smoked and I still crave them. I often dream about smoking. Purrs your husband finds the strength to quit again. -- Adrian (Owned by Snoopy and Bagheera) A House is not a home, without a cat. http://community.webshots.com/user/clowderuk Thanks for the advice NMR - it's always nice to hear an uninvolved male's point of view. It *has* been hard not to light up during all the stress, but I know we really can't afford to go back to smoking - we just don't have the $450/month it used to cost us! One good thing is that I managed to repress my anger so that the family could still enjoy Thanksgiving. Now that I've cooled down (and vented here some) hopefully I can attack this issue without attacking DH. Hugs, CatNipped |

I feel for him, and you. My dad took multiple tries, over a period of decades, before he finally quit smoking. Even being diagnosed with early stages of emphysema didn't do the trick. ( Years later, and with a case of emphysema that continued progressing over time, he FINALLY kicked the @)#($*@#)(*$ habit. Thank God for major favors. I wish it'd happened sooner, but I'm glad it happened at all. I hope your DH has success quitting again, and that the success continues. Donna, Captain, and Stanley I really, really worry about him - he is getting close to 300 pounds and he does *ZERO* exercise (and now that I've caught him he'll probably not even bother to go walk around the block while he smokes)! He's a heart attack or stroke just waiting to happen! : Hugs, CatNipped |

oups.com... My suspicions were *NOT* groundless. DH (standing for d*ck-head in this instance) was standing by the trunk of his car lighting up a cigarette!!!!!!!!!!! Dylan (my DP's) parents used to smoke when he was a kid. When he was a teen, they quit. Well, when his dad came to visit us in 2002 we caught him sneaking out to have a smoke. THis is after Christmas 2001 when we found cigarette butts in the bathroom and we weren't sure if they were his dad's or his younger brothers' (Turns out both his younger brothers were ALSO smoking, the middle one openly but the younger one since he was 14, clandestinely) And last year, Dylan found out that it wasn't just his dad smoking in the basement, but his mom again too. So now he's the only person in his family not a smoker, and he's going to be a DOCTOR so he is seeing people all the time who've smoked themselves sick. *** I hope that with some encouragement, you will be able to help Ben quit again and encourage him to exercise. Maybe you could find some kind of exercise that you could do together, or that he could do with his grandkids. That would make it more enjoyable to do. *** I struggle with caffeine...Everyone says "caffeine addiction, ha ha" but I have stomach problems and even a can of pop can leave me too sick to eat for several hours. Yet I'm lucky if I can cut myself down to one every other day. I remember when I had bad ulcers I had to quit entirely for several months and even through the painkillers i was on, I had the headaches from hell every day, starting at 2 pm until I passed out asleep, for over a month. Gods. I probably have no right to tell the smokers to knock it off, considering that my grandpa Ludwig died in his sixties from stomach problems. --Fil (Smoked one cigarette in my life, because I was in a fight with Dylan and I knew it would **** him off) Any addiction is bad news. Doesn't it seem odd, though, that humans are prone to all these addictions - sort of counter-evolution. Hugs, CatNipped |

Even after 2+ years without a cigarette, there are still times that I crave on really badly. That's the worst part of an addiction - you may "kick" it, but the urge never entirely goes away. I'm fortunate that my only addiction is to food (although that can be bad enough - "I keep losing weight, but it keeps finding me again"). I had an alcoholic friend who managed to stay dry for eight years, but when he came under stress (partly financial, partly losing a few close friends to AIDS) he began drinking again. He told me once "I know I COULD quit, if I really wanted to, but it just doesn't seem worth the effort". (However, he was apparently suffering from clinical depression for the last year or so of his life, although no one realized it until after his death - that can play havoc with your determination to do things, since EVERYTHING can seem "too much trouble".) Yeah. The really insidious thing is that when you get a bad craving you start thinking to yourself, "Heck, why bother to quit this if I'm only going to crave it incessantly for the rest of my life?" I have an addition to food also - and this addiction is truly hard kick because you *have* to have at least some of the substance you're addicted to in order to live! Hugs, CatNipped |

"CatNipped" wrote It *has* been hard not to light up during all the stress, but I know we really can't afford to go back to smoking - we just don't have the $450/month it used to cost us! Not to encourage anyone to start or resume a smoking habit, but if the urge becomes overpowering, there *is* an alternative to the high cost of manufactured cigarettes which are full of chemicals. There are some good clean brands of rolling tobacco - NOT "Top" or "Bugler" - that can be purchase by the pound or in smaller quantities. One such brand is "Midnight Special" which comes in six-ounce bags for around $5-6 including tax, and papers enough to roll the entire package are included. To break this down into the equivalent of "packs" of cigarettes, six ounces works out to about 1/2 cartons, or fifty cents a pack @ $6.00/bag. Making the cost even lower is the fact that these hand rolled smokes do not continue to burn when laid down and can be relit. And if they are rolled in the shape of a cone and lit on the fat end, there is almost no waste of tobacco in the butt. Thus, twenty smokes last as long as sixty of the ready-roll variety. Plus due to the necessity of rolling, it is not so easy to just grab one and light up. The act of rolling becomes a ritual during which one may if so inclined contemplate whether or not one truly desires this particular cigarette at this particular time - often leading one to stop and wait to smoke until a later time. |

... Yeah, I need to find some pictures of the gangrenous limbs of diabetic smokers to show to him! Hate to tell you CatNipped, but the pictures probably won't work. My dad smoked off an on since he was a preteen. He tried quitting but never was able to. We tried the pictures, etc. His attitude was nothing has happened to me, so that won't either. Good luck. An off the wall suggestion, that just might work. Maybe you can make a pact with Ben that if he walks with you around the block he can have 1/2 a cigarette, but outside. Once you get him moving, you maybe able to get him to quite and continue with the walking. Diane |
