I'm typing very slowly and mostly one-handed because I fell head-first off a
step ladder land landed on my face with my right hand bent under me. It's a
low step ladder and I was on the lowest rung, but the hand rail (bar?) is
low. When I put both hands on the bar, I lost my balance and went *head
first* over the bar. There was nothing I could do to stop it, and I landed
on my face with my right wrist bent under me. Fortunately, nothing is
broken--lots of bruising (I look like someone punched me in the eye), my
glasses were bent, and the wrist and fingers are sprained. The doctor told
me to get a sling, but that hasn't helped much. It's hard to find a
comfortable position for sleeping at night. The real test will come next
week when I put our church newsletter together. That takes a lot more work
from my right hand than I have been able to do so far.

I screamed when I fell, and Holly came running. She licked my cheek as I
lay there, and she hasn't left my side for more than a few minutes ever
since. She always does that. If I am hurt or upset, she comes running.
Our furbabies really do know when we are in pain.

I also posted this to H+B but did not use cross-posting.

What a sweet baby Holly is! I hope you heal quickly.

Even though you think the sling hasn't helped much, please use it. It will
help remind you not to use the right hand. With both wrist and fingers
sprained, it would be much better not to use the right hand at all.

Please try to find someone at church to do the newsletter for you, tell them
there won't be one next month, or use only your left hand. The latter will
take forever, but protect you from causing further injury which will prolong
the healing process. I know it is frustrating not to be able to use the
right hand, but right now, Please Don't!

Oh Mary, I hope you're ok! That sounds like a nasty fall. I'm glad you
were able to get up because it sounds like you were laying there if
Holly was licking your face. Take care of yourself please! It can be
scary living alone when something like this happens.

Everyone that lives alone should have some sort of emergency calling
device. I have a "help at hand" caller. I wear a pendant around my neck
that I have programmed to call 911 and leave a message that I need help.
Some of these have a monthly fee but the "help at hand" can be purchased
(Amazon.com) for $100 and there is NO monthly charge.

That sounds like a good deal. My house has a security system connected
to the front gate. I can hit a "panic button" on one of the two control
panels. The problem with that is one of them is in the kitchen by the
garage door, the other is in the master bedroom. If something happens
to me in another room and I can't get to one of those, I'm SOL. So far
it has worked out for me but as I get older I'm considering one of those
pendant things. And I definitely do *not* want another monthly bill.
I'll look into Help at Hand, thanks

One good thing about the security system is if I'm not near a control
panel but can call 911, they monitor all the 911 calls. They'll send a
security guard over to check things out before an ambulance gets here.
So if I got one of those and programmed it to dial 911 I wouldn't be
sitting here by myself waiting for help to arrive.

Very scary! Don't worry about typos or anything like that. Just take
care of yourself. Scritches (with your left hand!) to Holly for being
such a good little nurse

I considered one of those when i fell on another occasion. instead, i have
kept my cell phone in my pocket ever since that time. so, i could have used
it to dial 911 or a friend if i had not been able to get up.

thanks,
