Everyone that lives alone should have some sort of emergency calling
device. I have a "help at hand" caller. I wear a pendant around my neck
that I have programmed to call 911 and leave a message that I need help.
Some of these have a monthly fee but the "help at hand" can be purchased
(Amazon.com) for $100 and there is NO monthly charge.

I considered one of those when i fell on another occasion. instead, i have
kept my cell phone in my pocket ever since that time. so, i could have used
it to dial 911 or a friend if i had not been able to get up.

thanks,

That's a sensible idea, I do the same.

I cancelled my cell phone service because I had to walk outside and down
the street to get a signal. I'm really considering one of those
pendants (sans monthly fees).

When I tripped over Persia's cat steps (since moved to a much better
spot!) I fell face first into the night stand. I broke my nose. I
couldn't see because my glasses fell off. I was crying and bleeding all
over the place. A cell phone where I live wouldn't have done me a bit
of good. YMMV of course.

I keep my cell phone in my pocket since I had a fall a couple of years ago.
However, I also have one of those buttons. You can wear it in the shower,
and I do. Also, it's easier to push a button once than to turn on the phone
and dial 911.

After my mother fell a couple of time ( luckily she wasn't hurt to bad
and could get up) she got one of the alert buttons. She has a pendant
she wears. I know I feel better that she has it.

She also got a lock box from the fire department that is attached to the
house near the side door. If they need to get into her house they have a
master key to the box and her house key is inside. This way the don't
have to brake down a door.

It was my daughter's idea that I get the button I have, and it makes us both
feel better. My call goes to the local hospital. I don't have a lockbox,
but they have names and phone numbers of people with keys, including my
next-door neighbor. There's usually somebody home there.

I'm typing very slowly and mostly one-handed because I fell head-first off a

low. When I put both hands on the bar, I lost my balance and went *head
first* over the bar. There was nothing I could do to stop it, and I landed
on my face with my right wrist bent under me. Fortunately, nothing is
broken--lots of bruising (I look like someone punched me in the eye), my
glasses were bent, and the wrist and fingers are sprained. The doctor told
me to get a sling, but that hasn't helped much. It's hard to find a
comfortable position for sleeping at night. The real test will come next
week when I put our church newsletter together. That takes a lot more work
from my right hand than I have been able to do so far.

I screamed when I fell, and Holly came running. She licked my cheek as I
lay there, and she hasn't left my side for more than a few minutes ever
since. She always does that. If I am hurt or upset, she comes running.
Our furbabies really do know when we are in pain.

I also posted this to H+B but did not use cross-posting.

TuTu and I will send our bestpurrs and good wishes for a complete

recovery. Sleeping when

injured or after surgery can be difficult. One time, after doing the "splits" on black ice, I had to sleep
in my recliner for three months. This might also work for you if you place a pillow under your arm.
Step ladders can be dangerous and so can step stools (experience). Give the sprain plenty of time to heal so
as to avoid future trouible. Hugs and purrs to Holly and Duffy. MLB

That sounds like a good deal. My house has a security system connected
to the front gate. I can hit a "panic button" on one of the two control
panels. The problem with that is one of them is in the kitchen by the
garage door, the other is in the master bedroom. If something happens
to me in another room and I can't get to one of those, I'm SOL. So far
it has worked out for me but as I get older I'm considering one of those
pendant things. And I definitely do *not* want another monthly bill.
I'll look into Help at Hand, thanks

I have a security system with a panic button but like you, I have to be
close to it. I had a scare a month or so ago where I fell down the
stairs and it was nearly impossible to get up and I think I did serious
damage to my leg and ankle because it still hurts a lot but if I hadn't
been able to get up, it could have been bad. Since my back surgeries I
still don't have good use of my legs.

I checked Amazon.com and the "help at Hand" has gone up in price -
somewhere around $130. If you can't find it on Amazon, it is sold by
Electric Component Service, 4584 N. Hiatus Road, Sunrise, Florida
33351-7988. Tel No. 954-748-6851.

I just found it on Amazon still listed at $99.95 USD. The problem I
might have with something like this is it's wireless. My laptop has a
router but a wireless connection here is hit or miss so I use a cable
connection instead. I'm not sure I'd want to stake my life on being
able to get a wireless signal through.

I got rid of my cell phone because I don't want to have to walk outside
and down the street to see if I can get "bars".

The "Help at Hand" main unit is directly connected to the telephone line
by wire. The pendant sends a radio signal to the main unit to activate
it either in test mode (a button) or help mode (by pulling out a ring).
The pendant will work through walls and depending on obstacles will work
for 100 feet. The unit requires power to work but the stored numbers
and messages are retained if the power is off.
