Lorelei update 11-10-2010

Well, Lorelei is making little baby steps of progress: she ate a little
more today, including some of her dry food, AND she used the litter box.

I have been worried, because since she got to my home on Monday
afternoon, she hasn't used it until sometime tonight. *BIG* sigh of
relief!

Given that she has eaten so little, until last night and today, it's not
too surprising.

I was concerned about her not drinking any water, but canned cat food
has a lot of water in it, so she's getting some water from that.

Lorelei is still very scared: I still find her down in the basement,
where it's cold and the floor is cement

The poor kitty. I have coaxed her upstairs several times, only to find
her back down in the basement again. So I finally got some old towels
and made her a sort of a bed, so at least she isn't on the cement floor
anymore.

I spend a lot of time with her, and she like to have her ears scratched,
but she prefers to hide in the basement.

Poor Lorelei is not taking the big move very well at all

I know she's a nice cat, because she came right up to me in her previous
home and let me give her scritches, and rub her pretty spotted tummy

But, I think she can use all the help she can get. I'm sure she can
At least there isn't another cat, or a dog to make it even harder on
her.

I went shopping today and I bought a package of assorted cat toys, some
more of her brand of dry cat food, some more Fancy Feast, and a package
of catnip for Lorelei.

So far, she has ignored the toys, and the catnip, too.

I will wait a few days, and try again.

waiting game, second i am wondering if the house and all of the "new" is too
much, might want to start ofer and consider one room, prefferrable upstairs
to restrict her to, soft

She will have a grieveing period for the humans and animals she left behind.
Time will take care of it I am sure.

Her other human was going overseas in the military so she would have gone
through this change no matter what happened. Can you close the basement
door to keep her upstairs where it is warmer?

Don't expect her to make the adjustment overnight. It's a really big
change for her, and a big disruption in her lifestyle. I know you feel
bad that she's not settled in yet, but it also was unavoidable. If her
previous humans were unable to keep her, then a change of this magnitude
was an absolute certainty for her.

She just needs time to adjust to a home that looks different, smells
different, and is populated by different people. She will make that
adjustment in her own time, and will come to see your place as home and
you as her loving catslave.

How did she get along with the other cat and the dog where she was
before? If she was close to either of them, might she adjust better if
she had a furkid companion? Or would she adjust better by herself? It's
something to consider.

And as for Stormee's suggestion about initially restricting her to one or
two rooms - I think that's an excellent idea. That's how all of us got
introduced to our homes with our current humans.

I am absolutely positive that Lorelei will make the adjustment, and will
come to be a happy, loving kitty companion. Just be patient.

Put the food, litterbox, blankets, water, everything upstairs where
you are most of the time. Close the door to the basement. Keep her
with you at all times so that she gets use to you and the new house.

Unkle Gandalf, you have gotten some really good advice here, Even with
your loving care, and toys, catnip, etc, it will take some time for
her to adjust and I agree with keeping the basement door closed and
keeping her with you. She'll come around I am glad to hear she is
eating some canned food and using the litterbox, I remember you saying
she was close to her other furry companions, and she misses them, so
it IS a big addjustment for her. But given time, she will do fine, and
so will you. Love and purrs

I remember when Rebecca first came here. She didn't want anything to do with
me at first; she just hid and didn't eat for two days. She finally showed
some interest when she saw there was another cat there. I didn't push her,
and just let her relate to Sundance until she was more comfortable with me.
It took her a long time, but it was on her terms. Today she's just as much
of a pest as he is!

I am glad Rebecca finally adjusted and finally related to Sundance.
Cats all have different personalities, and it takes them different times and
ways to adjust.
Unka Gandalf, just be patient and give Lorelei, time and the love, you have
so much of, and she will come around. As long as she eats, and uses her
cat box, she will be fine. Be patient and don't worry, because she will
pick up on that. Purrs lovingly sent from our home to yours for you and her.
