I seriously don't understand what the payoff is. Other than the
attention, possibly. Sad, indeed.

There doesn't have to be a payoff. Perhaps it is a way to blow off
steam, so to speak. A woman I worked with for a few years used to
treat her staff like ****, and management wouldn't take it
seriously because she got her work done. I know of her personal
life because she told me some, and a few others knew about her
emotionally-abusive husband, and her toddler who literally ran her
life. She'd come to work and "control" things because she had no
control in her home life. She was a miserable woman. She was fired
a couple of weeks ago

Good God - did y'all throw a party?

when one of her staff got fed up and went to
have a heart-to-heart with the president of the company (who's PC's
he was entrusted to; at the office, his home and his beach house
PCs. They had a relationship that no one really knew about. lol).
There are all sorts of ways to "blow off steam" and maybe Usenet is
the way some do it. Yes, sad.

But making up aliases and signing people up for porn? That's much
more than blowing off steam. That's borderline psychotic. When the
line between Usenet and RL is crossed, there's something seriously
wrong. I can't imagine getting that worked up about someone that I
had to run off to sign them up for porn. I just laughed thinking
about it, actually.
