Default Advice Needed: Sibling rivalry

Hi! I used to be active in RPCA ages ago then slipped into lurk mode and
then haven't even had time for that lately. But, I need advice.

I have 3 kitties:

Lucy, 10 year old female, had her for 8 years. Overweight, not a lap kitty,
but demands her share of the attention.

Demon, 8 year old neutered male, had him since he was a tiny thing. He's my
snuggler...total lap fungus.

Missy, 2 year old female, had her since she was a baby. Bit on the dim
side, very cuddly, demanding and vocal.

Problem: Demon is harassing Lucy something awful. He chases her around,
cornering her and generally makes her miserable. She'll be walking across
the room and he'll just walk up behind her and bite the tip of her tail.
He's not playing either. He looks ****ed when he does it.

It's worst when I come home at lunch. If I show the least bit of affection
to Lucy, he jumps on her and chases her all over the place. I just had to
lock him in the bathroom so she could have some piece. When I picked him up
and tried to hold him, he attacked me!!!

This behavior just started within the last few months and I don't know what
to do. Any ideas why he's doing this or suggestions on how to stop him?

I have to get back to work and he's trying to dig his way out of the
bathroom. I'm almost afraid to let him out, but I think he leaves her alone
when I'm not here. It's like he's jealous or something!

Help!!

I have three cats and one of them, Marble, the tabby tyrant cna be an awful
bully to Waffles. What works *reasonably* well in calming them (Marble in
particular) is having a couple of Feliway diffusers on the go - one upstairs
and one downstairs.

Cheers, helen s

Welcome back, KKat! I really have no help to offer, it's just that I think
that maybe something changed a few months ago to start this. Do you have any
idea what that might be?
I'm sure others will have much better ideas to help you.
Lots of purrs and gentle calming hugs to your kitties and you,

Have you ahd Demon to the vet to check for a medical problem that could
bring on that aggression? If it's not a health issue, then I'll second
Helen's suggestion of Feliway diffusers, and you also want to try adding
Rescue Remedy to the drinking water.

the only thing that has changed is Lucy's personality. She used to be a
touch-me-not kind of gal....now she's verging on becoming a lap fungus. I
think he's just jealous of her getting attention that he thinks should all
belong to him.

She's started coming up on the couch for an evening snuggle and that had
always been *his* time...I don't want to discourage her from looking for
cuddles, I love the change in her personality. But, Demon needs to get used
to the changes too. I still make sure he has plenty one-on-one snuggle
time, but he wants *all* my time.

he was to the vet about 8 weeks ago for a stomach upset...he was puking all
the time. I got rid of the dried grass he was eating from a vase and that
cleared up right away. The vet said he was in fine shape other than the
upset tummy.

I'm thinking it's a combination of jealousy and over-crowding. Lucy, the
one he's picking on, is getting cuddlier as she ages and he gets all wild
when I pay too much attention to her.

Also, we live in a basement apartment so there aren't enough choice sun
spots to lay in and he picks on her until she lets him have her spot by the
window.

I just don't know how to fix either of these things.

or the folks on this newsgroup might be able to recommend where to find
them for a lower price. They are just like a plug-in air freshener, but
they release Feliway instead (artificial facial-gland pheremone).

I also found Rescue Remedy in the kitty water dishes helped noticably as
well. 4 or 5 drops in a water dish really seemed to help.

Have there been any changes that might have prompted this behaviour? New
family member? New furniture?
Have you tried Feliway? The diffuser has worked for some people with
similar problems.
