How sweet! I live on a chain of islands surrounded by salt marshes. One
day I was driving off the island and this crittercame out of the rushes
and flippered across the road. My first thought was, "Is that a seal?"
Then I realized no, we don't have seals in South Carolina. It was a
river otter! I'd heard of them but never seen one before. It was
adorable! Its fur was very sleek shiny as it was wet from swimming
I'd never seen any type of otter in the wild, only at the zoo back in
Tennessee. It was a real treat.

Just don't let that cute face fool you - I've heard that otters have a
mean and nasty temperament and would bit you as soon as look at you.

Yep, they will bite you as soon as look at you but that's because they
are a
wild animal. That does not make them mean and nasty as such. It's
important for them to be mean and nasty and bite otherwise they would
not
survive.

Otters are slowly returning to British rivers. Luckily my nearest river
is
a mile and half away. They can be predators of poultry.

Actually, I'd read an article, and also watched a wildlife show that said
they were kind of mean-tempered, like a shrew. But the danger isn't in
that... the danger is that humans see them and have the reaction awwww,
look how cute, then try to pet them (yeah, people are idiots) and end up
getting a few fingers bitten off (hey, they can open clams with those
teeth and jaws).

Get away from the idea that wildlife is cute.

Exactly! People have had their faces bitten off by "pet" monkeys,
attacked and ravaged by "pet" tigers, etc.

I think it's OK to think that a *picture* of wildlife is cute. I know
enough not to go up to a wild animal and try to pet it!

I will not sniff at my male human's feet after he takes his shoes off,
freeze my mouth open in disgust and then sniff my private parts to compare
odors. -- Cat Resolutions

The ones around here eat shrimp, clams, oysters. That particular stretch of
road where I saw the otter flippering its way across has natural oyster
beds. It's a salt marsh, which ebbs and flows with the tides from the south
Atlantic ocean. You can hear the oysters "clicking" on the marsh when the
tide is out. It's a phenomenon unique to this part of the US. And it's
spring, so the shrimp will soon be running in the creeks. I know there are
people in the area who raise chickens, but these otters are perfectly happy
with all the fresh sea food
