It was awesome the way Street Smart came from the rear to win. I wondered if Karen Chuplis was watching. She was an avid fan, as I remember. MLB |

I wanted him to win because 1) I am tired of hearing about the Juvie Jinx (that the 2 y.o. champ of the previous year is jinxed to win the Derby the following year) and 2) Calvin was soooooooo HAPPY. I was worried he would fall off Street Sense on his way back to the winners circle. It was a GREAT race. Hard Spun was VERY impressive too. Maybe an actual rivalry is shaping up! |

Yes, it was fun seeing how happy he was. It looked as though Hard Spun had it in the bag until Street Sense started moving up. Going from 19th to winning in such a short distance was amazing! Of course, I admit, I've seen one other Kentucky Derby on TV, and I've never seen a horse race in person. However, I've learned a lot about horse racing by reading Dick Francis mysteries. ;-) Anyway, it was a terrific finish, and I'm so happy for the jockey. Joy Joy |

You don't often see a Derby winner as covered in mud as Street Sense was at the end. Loved it when Calvin gave him a sponge bath. Also #3) the trainer with 5 horses (25% of the field) *didn't* win. Nothing against the man personally, but that really is a bit too much for me. And #4) the winning trainer has only brought horses to the Derby twice - and won both times. Of course, the first time his horse won has been immortalized and repeated on TV many times (including yesterday). He was the trainer for the horse owned by the 90-something lady who apparently couldn't see too well - they sat together in the stands, and he had his arms around her as he told her what was going on all the way around. And she was just so *thrilled* that her horse won, she was speechless (well so was he - thrilled, I mean), and he gave her a big kiss. On the forehead, I believe. I think Queen Elizabeth only used the Jamestown commemoration as an excuse to come to the US. Her real, true reason was to go to the Derby. Knowing the horsewoman and racing enthusiast she is, I was really surprised to read that she'd never been to one before. Jeanne Hedge ============ http://www.jhedge.com |
