Help, we just adopted an outdoor cat that showed up in our yard this
summer. He was very scary at first but finally let us pet him if we
were sitting down. If we moved he would run away. When we went in at
night he would come to our back door and act like he wanted to come in,
we finally got him to come in and stay in without climbing the screen
to get out. Two weeks ago we had him neutered and got him his shots.
He is still scary. He will come near me in the morning when he wants to
be fed but that is it. He will lay on my parents bed but if either
goes near him he will run away. He seems to have changed since we
brought him in. All's my mom wanted was a cat of her own, I have one,
(which by the way can't come out of the room yet because she is still
scared.) He loved my mom outside, now he wants nothing to do with her.
Is there something I can do to get him used to us. I don't know if he
came from a home where he was abused, he has a scar on one of his ears.
I would appreciate any advice. Thank You

Feral cats sometimes need time to settle down. Getting him his shots
and neutering was an excellent step, but it could have scared him a bit
as well.

I'd recommend giving him space. A change of environment can be a very
scary thing, and he's going to need time to adjust. As long as he has
food, water, a litter box, and a nice safe place where he hide are what
he is going to need most. Socializing a feral cat can be very slow and
require much patience, but the reward when a former feral kitty settles
in and becomes a part of the family can't be beat.
