Default Of Winged Kittens

In the meadow by the Rainbow Bridge
A saint is taking care
He's handing out the kibble
And brushing poodles' hair
He scritches all the kitties' ears
And makes the ferals tame
He even feeds the bunnies
Saint Francis is his name

Now sometimes on a foggy day
A cat will come and meow
The kitty wants a pair of wings
The kitty wants them NOW!
Saint Francis then sighs sadly
Because he knows just why
That kitty's person is alone
And kitty needs to fly

Back down below, a nursing home
Contains a lonely man
His wife passed on ten years ago
His son, in Vietnam
His brother died in '89
His best friend, years before
And one last neighbor came sometimes
But doesn't anymore

The time is getting closer now
For him to say goodbye
The nurses sniffle in the halls
Because he's going to die
In hospice ward, that's nothing new
They don't have hearts of stone
And still it makes them very sad
When someone dies alone

Back up above, Saint Francis calls
The angel Raziel
And says 'Clean out your wing-brush, Raz,
Bring feathers! Fly like hell!'
Together, then, they make some wings
And put them on the cat
Saint Francis says 'Fly quickly, Sphinx.
Don't stop to chase a rat.'

The old man tells his hospice nurse
How he once had a cat
A lovely tabby he named Sphinx
Because of how he sat
And how his wife adored old Sphinx
And cried so at the vet
The day they put old Sphinxy down
He remembers that day yet

And though the pain is not so bad
The old man still recalls
How much he loved his old cat Sphinx
His cat, who stalked his halls
The cat who brought him back a mouse
And sniffed at sodas' fizz
His dear old cat, who loved him so
"But LOOK! Ma'am! THERE HE IS!"

The hospice nurse is sighing now
And wipes away a tear
She thought his death was beautiful
He thought his cat was near
She doesn't seem to realize
In Heaven, up above
Sometimes God lets a winged cat
Bring home the man he loves.

That's beautiful, Gandalf!

"Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears,

but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you.

I loved you so -- 'twas Heaven here with you."

That is a wonderful poem! And I am particularly fond of St. Francis.
